A wonderful person, a treasured friend.....who left this world too soon. Susie and I became best friends in junior high and we shared a friendship lasting 50 years. She lives on in my memories and will never be forgotten.

Susie Spaeth was the first love of my life.  I fell for her in the second grade, always giving her the large, 3-cent valentine cards rather than the small, packaged cards that the rest of my gradeschool classmates got.  Certainly, I thought this act spoke volumes concerning my deep admiration for this beautiful, blue-eyed girl.  I continued to be in love with Susie well into the 6th grade until it became clear to me that a dark and handsome boy with a fine singing voice, Emil Garret, was the real,  though current, object of her affection.  Heartbroken is not too great a word to describe me at that time; but it gave me that important experience, so early on, that we can and will survive lost love.  Now, the interesting thing about this entire affair is that when I spoke with Susie at our 40th LC reunion--when I confessed my early and lengthy adoration--she responded, "You, David?  But you were always so quiet.  I had no idea, and you never said anything to me."  Well there it is!  I had failed entirely in communication, that key element in any love affair.  I was extremely shy, it seems, everywhere except in my boundless imagination.

It was wonderful to see Susie then, 10 years ago.  I was happy for her; how her life had moved through some difficult times into a long, warm and mature happiness.  I was shocked when I read of her passing.  Finally, thank you Vicki for your lovely words about Susie and your half-century friendship.  I'll always remember Susie Spaeth too, in the way that we always remember our first real love.  Rest in peace, kiddo.  You're a gem.

It is still difficult to think that Susie is gone.  We were friends from 7th grade and continued this friendship after we both married, had children, and had grandchildren.  I will never forget the great times we had with her family at Steve and Vicki's river property (Steve Nolting and Vicki Schiesser Nolting).  All 3 of our families had boats and we went on many boating excursions as well as camping trips.  Our kids were all around the same age and they became good friends.  Will I ever forget these times???  Never - they were the best times of my life.  I love you Susie, and miss you.
