Party in the back and business in the front, how could that possibly be stupid! Christie, I will post some pictures just as soon as my husband gets a haircut (I heard mullets were stupid). Seriously, I have to get an up to date photo of my family then I will post .

Mr. Dunstan, Mr. Horner, Ms. Jenkins...all bring back memories! It's great to hear those names and all of yours again.

Listen, I just wanted to weigh in on Christie's idea. I'd love to do something to help raise money for a scholarship or something new for Greenon. Could someone local find out what would be at the top of the teachers' wish list?

While I'm not local anymore, I want to offer to help on this. I am very willing to help get auction items or work with you, Christie, on something else.

Best, Heidi (Randall) Seiffert

I'm in agreement that I would really like to DO something that gives back to the school itself. Unfortunately, I haven't even been inside the building in probably 17 years so I'm not familiar with what's needed. I'm game for doing manual labor if that's what's necessary to get a project done or if it's more along the lines of raising money for something that needs to be purchased--I'm fine with that too.

It's been almost 20 years since we've walked those halls as students just bursting with potential. During those days, we were "takers"--getting an education and using the resources that were available to us. Now that we're adults we should be the "givers", and giving back to our school no matter how big or little the project may be should be inspiring to others. What better lesson to teach our children and the current students of GHS?

For some reason I want to plant a class of 1989 tree on the grounds. It would have been fun to plant one 20 years ago and get a class picture around it. Then at our 10 yr reunion we could've gotten another picture. Then at this reunion.... it would've been fun to see the changes of us and the tree as we've all matured. Okay, so that idea might be 20 years late in the making, but at least my gears are starting to turn! :)

Those of you who are local, please guide us on where the needs are for the school.
Blessings to all of you,
Heather~

Greenon needs a new high school...LOL..though I think that is our of our reach.

The boosters are selling stepping stones to make money for a personalized walkway by the stadium, the link for which is on the Greenon home page--we plan to buy one for the class.

Seeing as how we will be having our reunion during both homecoming and the Apple Butter Festival, maybe we could organize something for game night (like a mass walk around the track with the homecoming floats). Maybe someone's booth at the Apple Butter Festival would let us take donations for a tree to be planted at Greenon near the stadium (so we don't lose it in the event we actually get a new school before this one falls down).

The only reason I wanted to focus on raising money for the reunion(s) is that they will get progressively expensive and if we have a bit of a savings, we won't have to have the classmates pay such a high price each year.

Maybe we could sell raffle tickets at the reunion for some donated higher-ticket item with the procedes benefitting a scholarship or a donation to the school or something. (I think there still is the Buddy Myers schoarship and the Dean Martin award used to have a scholarship, I think--the treaurer would know for sure about those.)

It is great to see all this discussion. I'm excited to find out what we all come up with!

What would you all think about raising money to donate a trophy case for the arts to the high school?

So many of us were in drama, band, choir, and art, and nothing exists at Greenon to highlight the achievements of anyone but the sports. There are still pictures in the lobby of Greenon from the ball teams of the 1970s but nothing to honor academic or art achievements! (GRRR!)

I have no idea what something like that costs, but we could donate it with a plaque that says where it came from.

Does anyone have a photo of the Marching Band doing script GIAMPETRO with Urbana High School? Would have been 1986.

I think that is a fantastic idea! Are the pictures of the band from each year still hanging in the band room? You are right that there is nothing else to mark the achievements of the arts. Maybe we could check with someone local or in Springfield to do this in exchange for advertising or something.

I really love this discussion about giving back to Greenon and the community. In addition to the teachers' wish list and a monetary donation or community service project (which I strongly support), maybe we could sponsor something as basic as a "career day" on Homecoming Friday. So many of our fellow alumni have accomplished some significant things in the 20 years since high school....Didn't you always hope that there was so much more, beyond the walls of Greenon? I am sadly really out of touch with the demographics and the needs of the current student body, but I have been inspired by some of the stories on this site, and I am sure we could inspire some future alumni as well. If Mr. Dunstan is still counseling at Greenon, perhaps we could work with him to organize?

I am really tickled that we are talking about giving back too. Mr. Dunstan would be over the moon to hear from all of us (ddunstan@greenon.k12.oh.us). I think he is great at being an advisor--he has certainly helped the board with decisions about PSEO programs, etc.

Bob McClure is Greenon's principal and mentioned that they are tring to raise money to reconstruct the flag poles and plaques that sit at Greenon's entrance by the tennis courts. He said Greenon has a flag!

My primary objective to improve the student morale at Greenon is to open the lobby to something more than sports--pictures of ball teams from 30 years ago is crazy when nothing from academics, arts, or military service exists there. Greenon is so much more than sports.

About an arts/academia/military showcase cabinet - yes definitely. I'm a bit surprised I never realized one was missing. Any ideas of how it could be maintained/updated? It would be a great thing to get underway. It seems like a classic "class gift" for us. How much does something like this cost? About a tree (Heather's latest) I bet that wouldn't be complicated to arrange. There must be a nursery who would work with us. I could see the papers covering the planting, giving plenty of advert to the nursery. Even if the GHS campus didn't want it, if John Bryan Park or even Enon Park would work with us, I'd feel like it was in a good home. About a career day (Cindy's latest) I'm excited. What a great homecoming activity - I can see going on Friday to speak to classes ... then when we show up at the game we at least won't be unknown freaks. Sign me up! Oooo, and it doesn't cost anything. Wow that's a lot of ideas.

We were always full of those...ideas, that is.

After the first of the year, the fundraising, etc. will be more organized and we will be able to put together some concrete information about all these things, I think. Planning this far ahead for a career day would be tough for the district administration, but I think it is great and very doable!

Comparatively, trees are inexpensive and could be something we do regardless of whether we do the display case or not.

10/07/08 10:45 AM #17

Heather Seward (Glazer)

I like the display case idea. Perhaps we can get a few bids to find out roughly how much money we're needing to raise. Do we have stuff to go in it currently? Maybe a couple of folks locally can start collecting different awards, pictures, etc if it's decided that this is the project we want to undertake.

As far as the tree idea, I'm totally up for still doing it especially since it won't cost very much. Maybe the senior class for next year might want to plant their own tree at the same time. Yeah, I know, I'm a tree hugger!!

Ya’ll have such good ideas.

I would love to contribute in any way possible and definitely participate in any of the events that are decided upon. I wish I had some awards from Drama or Music to add. Truly the only things I have are the hysterical memories of so many fun times in both areas. Choir should have never been as “off the hook” as it was given what I know now and theatre maybe should have had a higher parental rating than “G” from time to time. If I had to teach us, I probably would have come unglued. My hat is off to all of you who went on to teach High School.

I was talking to some of the 1988 class and they had a wonderful time at their 20th. Besides some of the general activities, have there been any discussions on specifics or is it way too early to plan? The career day sounds very interesting. The tree planting idea is also a given. I would love to permanently add something to the grounds that shows we were there and look back upon with our families. I think maybe we should consider something in memory of those we lost as well.

Do we have any money in the “fund” yet? Should we start sending donations or doing some small fundraisers? I know we have a whole year, but it is exciting this time of year. We are at the football games here in Raleigh every Friday night as my daughter cheers and it brings back so many memories. It also raises the awareness of how old I feel.

Let’s keep the discussions going. It is so great to hear everyone’s ideas and general comments about now and then.

Colin

Wow!! All these great ideas and none of us will run for President!! I am local in the Shawnee district. So if anyone needs something done local I can help out as much as needed. Just send me a message or put it on here and I will find out what you need to know. I will do my best to get an answer within a day or 2.

I went to the 88 reunion because I married Jay Young and it was a BLAST!!!! We need to try to get as many classmates on this website as possible so that no one misses out on the reunion. We have some money in the fund to get things started. I am trying to convert it into a checking account instead of a savings, but as usually it seems like you have to jump through 1,000 hoops to get anywhere. I am going to give Anna the account info so she can get things rolling with pay pal. Again I can't wait until our reunion .. I know we will have just as much fun as Jay's class did....

It is great to see all of this discussion about helping our community. (Don't be so sure no one will run for president:))

I have been chatting with the band director, the superintendent, and Bob McClure about our ideas. They all think the ideas are great.

In terms of stuff for the display case, I know the band had trophies in the past--who knows were they may be now--and I think the choir and possibly some art students won awards too. I am sure we will be able to scrounge something up.

By the way, the band director is planning to put together an alumni band to play at homecoming next year. He is also looking for photos, etc., from the band's history since he cannot locate any sort of records from the past--figures. If anyone has anything to share with him, you could send it to me or pass it along to him at jfry@greenon.k12.oh.us

Happy Holidays to everyone!! The new year will go fast and the reunion will be here before we know it. We need to e-mail this website (or at least spread the word) to as many classmates as we can, so that we can try to get as many of the classmates as possible to the reunion!!

Hope you have a safe and joyous holiday season!!

Does anyone still buy that much hair spray?

07/05/09 12:04 AM #25

Jenny Carter (Redish)

I know it's been awhile but I am sending this anyways. In response to Trudi- I don't think that the whole hairspray, pick and hairdryer thing are that in anymore. (it's hard to find the ginormous spray cans of 'Rave'!!) I always laugh and say that when the 'party hair' thing comes back in-I'm there!!! Although, with my profession, too much hairspray could be a very bad thing.......

Hey guys the tree idea is great. And I was in Greenon a year or so back. You're right Anna, a whole new school is needed. No wait, Indian Valley did that already.
Hey Christie, remember band practice in the cafeteria at IV? The teacher's lounge at Greenon is smaller than I thought! We could donate a microwave or coffee pot for the teachers. I have a lot of contacts in the human services field and will check around town to see if Habitat for Humaity is building a house or some other community project is going on around reunion time. I know the Enon Library is fixing to move into a new building but when? I don't know if they have even been working on it, but something for the school or Enon library would be cool- web cams are not that expensive. Since we have so many classmate in the military this would be a way for families to keep in touch. However, knowing a few of you as I do I don't know if web cams in the school library in our day would have been a good idea. ;) I would personally like to forget all the memories of Young's, some things are too painful. To this day I cannot eat an ice cream cone without hearing someone Moo for an extra dip! Hollar.
