Myles Dixon Obituary

Myles Lloyd Eugene Dixon, 68, of San Francisco, California, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, after a lengthy illness under the care of hospice at the Jewish Home in San Francisco.

Myles was born on March 4, 1956, in Springfield, Ohio, the oldest of four children born to Lloyd and Helen (Browner) Dixon.

He was a graduate of Springfield North High School, where he sang in the choir and participated in various organizations and clubs. To prepare for college, he enrolled in the Upward Bound Program at Wittenberg University. After high school, Myles attended Ohio University (Athens), earning a B.A. in English Literature. He later obtained an M.A. in Health Services Administration from Antioch University in Yellow Springs. He relocated to San Francisco to attend Antioch University (Berkeley), where he received advanced training, special certification, and credentials in Community Health Planning in preparation for working with populations impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Myles held various jobs throughout his youth, his favorite being at a local record store, where he indulged his love and appreciation for music across different genres. He began his professional career at Job and Family Services—Project Employ in Dayton. After moving to San Francisco, he received extensive training and later worked at the Community Planning Consortium and Bayview Hunters’ Point. He then became a personnel clerk at San Francisco General Hospital and eventually served as a Disease Control Specialist and Health Educator.

Myles concluded his extensive career in civil service with the State of California, working as a Specialist in the Passport Department for 20 years before retiring.

After retirement, Myles' passion for serving his community led him to become the founder of Open House, a support group for LGBTQ+ elders. He facilitated discussions, educational workshops, and provided resources to address the needs of this community.

A person of strong faith, Myles lived a life that reflected his spiritual devotion. He was a devout Catholic for most of his life but explored various other religious traditions while always remaining connected to his Catholic roots. Most recently, he found peace in converting to the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian faith.

During his time at Ohio University, Myles pledged Phi Beta Sigma fraternity and remained active in the San Francisco alumni chapter until his health began to decline.

Myles was passionate about travel and immersed himself in the history, culture, art, music, and cuisine of every place he visited. He was also a gifted wordsmith, writing poetry from the age of eight. Despite a significant visual disability, he was an avid reader, particularly drawn to history, Black history, English literature, travel, art, and music.

A man of vast knowledge and gentle spirit, Myles was known for his warmth, approachability, and engaging nature. He shared his wisdom freely, never in a condescending manner, but always with a desire to uplift and enlighten others.

Myles is survived by his beloved mother, Helen (Browner) Dixon; sisters, LaTaunya (Dara) Dunn and Angela (Stephen) Williams; and his dear friend, Maurice Evans, whom he considered a brother. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, extended family, and many close friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd E. Dixon; his brother, Bryan Lee Dixon; and his niece, Tamara E. Dunn.

I too fondly remember Myles as a kind and gentle spirit with a permanent smile etched on his face. It appears that he led quite an accomplished life, which is a testament to his character. I also had the pleasure of attending church and other events with his sisters, also beautiful souls. Myles, you have lived well, my friend, now rest well in God's care...
