Skip Werley -
George Werley, Jr.
January 24, 1940 — March More…
Springfield, PA
George F. “Skip” Werley Jr., age 83, of Springfield, PA, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on March 1st, 2023.
Born in Allentown, PA, he was the son of the late George F. Werley Sr. and Jean Olive (née Wetherhold) Werley.
Skip earned his Master’s Degree and began a long career in Education. He was well loved in his career in teaching, not least for the humor and life skills he brought to the classroom. He spent many years teaching and coaching basketball at Springfield High School and spent the end of his career as athletic director there. He also coached basketball at Ursinus College. Many of his players became lifelong friends, especially of the Ursinus team he took to the Final Four.
Skip was the beloved husband of Merle “Mike” (nee McCallister) Werley. He was the loving father of Brooke Michele Werley (Andrew Hamilton), Shane McCallister Werley (Anna Crisci), and Jenna Werley Burkhart (Christopher). Skip was the deeply loved grandfather of Oscar and Ada Jean Hamilton. He is also survived by his brothers, Mike Werley (Donna) and Ralph Werley (Meg), as well as his nephews and niece.
Skip was always available with a joke or an inspirational quote. His positive outlook on life was contagious. He loved to travel west with his family during his summer vacations to the Grand Tetons, Big Sky Country in Montana and even drove his truck as far as Alaska. He cared as much for the natural world as he did for his friends and family, you could often find him quietly admiring the wildlife around him. His influence is immeasurable; he impacted others every day with his passion and enthusiasm. He focused on the positive in all situations and always cared for others. The ripples of his loving actions in life will be felt for generations to come.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family, Thursday, March 9th, 2023, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at The Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA, 19073, 610-353-6300. Funeral Service to be held Friday, March 10th, 2023, 11:00 AM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 301 N. Chester Rd, Swarthmore, PA 19081, with interment immediately following at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA. There will be a celebration of life scheduled in the coming months.
In Lieu of Flowers, contributions in Skip’s memory can be made to Tyler Arboretum, 515 Painter Road, Media, PA 19063, where he spent many happy days.
