CLASS OF 1958 MEETING
HELD May 1, 2008

Those present:  Ruth Carpenter, Ron Currier, Pris Millay, Jim Mitchell, Martha Lucas, John Follett, Dottie Phillips Richardson, Clarence Abbott, Jim Spindler, Lorraine Buskey Millay, Vaughan Hadwen, Bill Moore, Kay Domey Putnam, Marlene Millay, Judy Blish, Gail Fairbank, Joan Greenwood and Betty Reasoner

BANQUET:  Lorraine, Ruth and Kay reported that 143 (85 classmates) will attend the banquet, being held at KJ's in North Springfield on June 28th plus four honored guests:  Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Seymour, Mr. John Hilliard and Mrs. Isabella Erickson. Jim Spindler and Nancy Moore Shanks will be our co-masters of ceremonies at our banquet; sounds like they have some interesting plans.

FLOAT:  Gail Bingham Fairbank reported good progress on our float preparations.  Since we can't have access to Gurney's flatbed trailer until Friday morning, June 27th, the committee is prefabricating as many items as possible.  Those planning to help that Friday at Gurney's barn in North Springfield should bring heavy duty staplers and staples and/or tack hammers and tack nails. We are still missing pictures of our 1963 and 1968 reunion floats.  If anybody has one, or both, of these pictures, please speak up as we want to have enlarged copies of all our previous floats on our 50th reunion float.

We hope that all classmates will find their "costumes" from previous class floats to wear in this 50th reunion parade.  Many of us have "the Class of '58 is 58" green t-shirts; some have clown outfits and Ali Baba and thieves outfits.  There will be seats on the float if you don't care to walk the parade route.

Next breakfast meeting will be held at Jonathan's on Friday, May 16th at 8:00 a.m..  Next class meeting will be held at HCRS Office Building at 390 River Street, Springfield, VT on Thursday, June 12th at 6:30 p.m.

Looks like we're going to have a swell reunion; it's not too late for more of you to plan to attend.

CLASS OF 1958  50TH REUNION MEETING
MARCH 20, 2008

We were very pleased to welcome several first time attendees:  Paul Petraska, Alex Greer, David LaPlante, Dolores Eastman and Jim Spindler.  In addition those attending were:  Clarence Abbott, Eugene Adams, Ruth Carpenter, Kaye Reynolds Dwinell, Gail Bingham Fairbanks, Joanie Foisset Greenwood, Bob Kennett, Martha LaBonta Lucas, Lorraine Busky Millay, Marlene Perry Millay, Priscilla Millay, and Kay Domey Putnam.

Registrations; Kay & Lorraine are doing a good job with registrations and state they are enjoying the communication with classmates.  So far 22 have registered (Kay received 9 more on Friday).  Several of those attending the meeting had not sent theirs in---they were encouraged to do it by the end of March.  We need to make a payment to KJ’s April first.  We will ask Fred to send out an updated e-mail requesting payment from those who have registered but not paid and also remind those who have not registered to do so.  We will also send a postcard with same request to those who do not have e-mail.

We need to find correct addresses and telephone numbers for:  Dawn Blake, Sylvia Clark Hunter, Lucinda Safford, Sally O’Neil, Monty Tobin and Barbara White and Ronald White.

Banquet:  Following the parade on Saturday, June 28th, several classmates will be going to KJ’s to decorate the hall and tables.  Anyone should feel free to join in and help. Joan shared some of the decorations that will be used on the tables that she and Helene are donating to the class.

Bob Kennett will be taking pictures that evening and would like a small chalk board to put in front of each person to easily identify who they are.  It was noted that Fred & Carol are making name tags that would take care of this.  It was suggested that we have a sign outside announcing the event and which door to enter.  (Need a volunteer to do the sign.)

Master of Ceremony:  It was brought up again that we were looking for a volunteer to be Master of Ceremony at the banquet.  With some persuasion, Jim Spindler graciously agreed.

Marlene suggested having an opportunity to take a group picture of classmates that attended the same grade schools together i.e.  all East School, Park Street school, South School, North Springfield School, etc.)

Booklet:  Priscilla shared a draft of two different designs that might be used for the booklet.  It was unanimous to use the one which allows for 2 classmates per page---providing the information will fit into the space.  Priscilla also provided copies of pictures of our classmates that have passed away which Fred sent to her---“Gone but not forgotten”.

Float:  We have Gurney Brothers Flat Bed.  The name of the float is:  50 Memory Lane.  Gail shared pictures of previous anniversary floats by our class.  The intention is to enlarge the pictures to about 18” by 24” –frame them and have them on the sides of the flatbed.  She has all of the previous years except---our 10th and 15th---if anyone has these years---please let her know.  (The ones we have are:  Good Year Blimp, Clock, Ali Baba, Garfield, Emmet Kelly, and All American.)  The other thing we would like to do---to go along with “50 Memory Lane” is to have all of us who plan to be in the parade, raid our closets, cellars & attics looking for one of the costumes from a previous year and wear it in the parade!  Now how much fun will that be.

Alex Greer volunteered to supply the bales of hale for the float.
Vaughn Hadwen is checking with his band to see if they would be willing to be on the float and play during the parade.
Eugene Adams is purchasing 100 balloons – Green with white lettering –SHS 1958 ----to be used on the float and at the banquet.  We will need to check on purchasing helium to blow them up.

On Friday, June 27th we will be spending most of the day at the Gurney’s decorating the float.

Music:  Bob Kennett said he would be using KJ’s sound system.  John Lashua is bringing some CD’s and Bob has some Country CD’s.  He said anyone could bring what they would like to hear and he would play it.

FRIDAY, MARCH 28th at 8:00 AM ----BREAKFAST AT JONATHON’S RESTAURANT

NEXT MEETING:  THURSDAY, MAY 8TH AT 6:30 PM AT THE HCRS OFFICE BUILDING ON 390 RIVER STREET, SPRINGFIELD

#2 Committee Reports
a.    Menu and decorations for KJ's
There will be no costs for decorations but we need to do them no sooner than 1pm on Saturday the 28th. There needs to be a buffet count by May 28th along with a 50% deposit. Then a final count 1 week before the 28th. There will be no charge for "no shows". Cost per person will be $35.It was decided to include a clause pertaining to vegetarian preference in the cover letter. It was also decided to have both beef and chicken on the buffet.

b.    Booklet Committee
The questionnaire to be sent out with the letter was reviewed and accepted. The cover letter was reviewed and accepted except for the addition of the vegetarian statement and John Follett felt we should also ask if anyone would like to take the opportunity to donate to the O'Leary Scholarship Fund as a gift from the class. A change was made to the time of the buffet to avoid confusion.  It was changed to 7pm instead of 7-12. Responses are to be mailed to Kaye Putnam by April 1st.

c.    Registration
Martha will be away so will give deposit slips to Kaye. Teachers to be invited will be Doug and Mary Seymour, John Hilliard and Isabella Erickson. Ruth Carpenter and Lorraine Millay volunteered to be greeters (registrars) at the banquet. (we told them they had to behave and be refined:if they wanted to do it)

d.     Float Committee
Needs wood, cloth strips, and cardboard, and lumber. Also are calling for some good pictures of old floats to be enlarged. Judy Blish will register our float as "50 Memory Lane " as was voted upon.  Gail felt all this could be done for about $350.

e.     Music Committee
Robert Kennett announced we will be using KJ's cd player and sound system which he felt was excellent. Anyone is welcome to bring cd's of the 50's era.  There is no cost. Robert will be in charge.

f.     Other Business
Linda Loegel’s letter was passed around and it was generally felt if she could attend the reunion it would be nice to have her read some excerpts.  We decided Fred should be in charge of this if he is willing.

Joanie will contact the alumni association to have them publish the 3 main events of our celebration in the newsletter.

Next breakfast get together is at Jonathans Restaurant on Feb.22nd at 8am.

Next business meeting to be held March 20th at 6:30 at HCRS.

Afterthoughts:

Bob Kennett and Kay Putnam have volunteered to be our official photographers with their digital cameras.

Martha WILL call Joyce and Priscilla will call Sally regarding the mc job.

And that's all she wrote.

Hi Fred & Carol: I am attaching a list of comments and/or suggestions from classmates that I have received via you. I thought it might be helpful to put them in this format to help to keep everyone up to date. Also for the booklet---do you have a way to send me the 1958 pictures of all the classmates? Things are moving along. We had a very nice breakfast last Friday at Jonathon's. Our next meeting is Thursday, February 14th at 6:30 pm at 390 River Street in Springfield (HCRS office.) Take care! Pris

Class of 1958
January 10, 2008 at 6:30
HCS building conference room No. Spfld

There were 12 present.

The first item discussed was an update on classmates including John Lashua who just had 2 knee replacements and is reportedly recovering well: Nancy Moore Shanks who was recently hospitalized; and the deaths of Joyce Phelps Crosier and the husband of Anita Kolstom Reninger.

We gave a big welcome to Bobbi Crossman White who is visiting from Colorado.

Teachers to be invited to the reunion include Doug Seymour, John Hilliard, John Donegan and Isabella Erikson.  Betty will write invitations to them.

The booklet committee had nothing to report at this time.

The registration committee is to wait for Ruth Carpenter to get an updated menu from KJ's so that the cover letter ( to be written by Kaye Domey Putnam) can be ready for the breakfast meeting on the 25th.

The float committee reported that they had viewed the trailer. It has no sides. Ron suggested we use bailed hay instead of chairs, Everyone thought that was a great idea. We will also be able to decorate the towing tractor if we so wish. Gail suggested the theme be "50 Memory Lane". "50 Years of Memories" was also suggested. Maybe we can get some input from people not at the meeting. After considerable discussion it was decided to have large blowups of pictures of our past floats on the float and the names only of our deceased classmates on the headboard. The picture board will be at the banquet. Gail will call Bill Lashua for photos he might have of the floats.

Other business discussed was the use of post cards for the replys and other things to save us postage. It is a considerable savings of 15 cents for each. This was Joanie’s idea. She noted also that we can have them specifically made up to reflect our class insignia on the front of the yearbook.

Reminder: The next breakfast meeting is on January 25th at Jonathans Restaurant at 8 am. The next evening meeting was scheduled for February 14th  at 6:30 at the HCRS conference room. We need more people to attend these meeting so write it down.

Those present were: Clarence Abbott, Gene Adams, Ron Currier, Natalie Kinsman Brown, Gail Bingham Fairbank, Ruth Carpenter, Kay Domey Putnam, Priscilla Woychosky Millay, Marlene Perry Millay, Lorraine Buskey Millay, Roberta Crossman White, Joan Foisett Greenwood, and Betty Reasoner Larabee

A request was made for a volunteer to take notes of our meetings. Betty volunteered. Priscilla mentioned that the theme of the parade almost matched our class motto "so little done, so much to do". Marlene and Betty suggested a daytime breakfast or luncheon meeting monthly due to many requests from people that want to get together and keep up on things but are unable to get out in the evenings. The first will be a breakfast meeting on Dec. 7th at Jonathans Restaurant at 8am. Marlene to make reservations.

We discussed how to recognize our fallen classmates. Robert suggested a wreath. Nothing else was discussed and no decision was made. Ruthie thought Joyce Harvey MacDougall should be asked to co--mc with Sally O'Neil., who has already volunteered to co--mc. After a short discussion it was moved, seconded and voted  unanimously. Someone will need to get in touch with Joyce. The subject of music was discussed and Robert volunteered to be in charge of low background music of the '50s. It was moved, seconded and passed unanimously.

A postage budget was requested for letters to people without e-mail. Priscilla has already used 41 dollars worth and Fred for nearly that much. Martha said we have 1300 dollars in our treasury.

Priscilla said we need to work on the booklet, the float, menu, and decorations, and the memorial. She suggested we form committees. Ruth and Joan volunteered to do KJ's and decorations. Robert to do the music and Fred and Carol have already volunteered to do the name tags.

Next discussion was on the float. Eugene offered his building to prepare the float which will need to be made so that it can be moved to Guerneys flatbed the Friday of alumni weekend. Gene wants to checkout the flatbed before any decisions can be made by his committee as to dimensions etc. It was mentioned that we should figure out a way to have music on the float. Many suggested ideas for the float but none were adopted so we will discuss it at future meetings and enter in on a plan by at least February.

Volunteers for the booklet committee were: Priscilla, Martha, Judy , Barbara and Kaye. Volunteers for the invitations, registrations were Betty, Marlene and Joan. Volunteers for the float committee were: Gene, Ron, Clarence, Vaughn, Robert and the whole group. Robert volunteered to put up a website. his e-mail address is :bobbyandhon.home.comcast.net. if anyone wishes to contribute anything.

Someone asked if there would be an opportunity for those who couldn't make it to the reunion to send letters to be read at the banquet. This will be included in the letter. We are also going to need a headcount for the Sunday picnic for Dianna to be able to plan.

We felt we had a good meeting and a lot had been accomplished so we called it a night. The next meeting will be January 17th at HCRS.

Class of  “58” Meeting
371 Restaurants
October 11, 2007

In preparation for our 50th High School Class Reunion June 2008, the Class of “58” held their first meeting on 10/11/07 at the 371 Restaurant at 6:00 pm and had a good turnout. Those in attendance were: Betty R. Larabee, Carol S. Bock, Clarence Abbott, Cynthia D. Ploof, Eugene Adams, Gertrude B. Andrew, Judy P. Blish, Mabel B. Bishop, Marlene P. Millay, Priscilla W. Millay, Robert Kennett, Ronald Currier, and Ruth Carpenter.

John Follett, Paul Petraska, Martha L. Lucas, Kay D. Putnam, Kaye Dwinell and D. Regan notified us that they could not make the first meeting.

Priscilla shared an e-mail she received from Martha who was not able to attend this meeting.  Martha indicated that we have $1,300 in our class savings account.

We discussed the following items:

50th Booklet: Most people felt that it would be good to have an updated booklet for the reunion. Suggestions for content were: Updated contact information, updated family info, birthdates, a value statement that guides your life, what have we learned in 50 years, accomplishments, favorite memory from school, high school picture or recent photograph.

Float: Judy P. Blish volunteered to contact Gurney Brothers to check into using the Gurney Flatbed which we understand is normally made available to the class celebrating their 50th.

Name Tags: Carol noted that she and Fred would volunteer to do the nametags including a picture.

Invitations: Ruth volunteered to coordinate the invitations which will be sent out once we decide the program noting the events that will be taking place alumni week-end --Friday, Saturday & Sunday.

Banquet: We have a reservation at KJ’s in North Springfield for our banquet. Martha has a menu she will share with us at our next meeting. Ruth also provided a copy of the menu.

Ruth suggested having disposable cameras on each table for people to take pictures throughout the evening for use in making a scrap book. Everyone thought this was a great idea.

Entertainment/Band: Some felt that we had a band at our last reunion and it was too loud, people couldn’t communicate without shouting and not too many people took advantage of it. Some felt it would be a nice to have background music. Following discussion, we decided to put this on a questionnaire for more input

Sunday, June 29th: Diana Lupien has volunteered to provide our class with a catered picnic on Sunday, June 29th. Martha and Cynthia have made arrangements to have the Hit-or-Miss Club on the Bellows Falls Road. They gave Diana some catering suggestions. This is a wonderful gesture on Diana’s part!

Web-site: Bobby Kennett suggested starting our own website.; He will explore this further and report back at the next meeting.

Questionnaire: It was decided to send out a questionnaire to ALL of our classmates and receive input from everyone to help make this the best reunion yet!

A poll was taken as to the best evening to hold our next meeting? All those present agreed that Thursdays work the best and it would be good to have the meetings in a more quiet space. We scheduled the next meeting for THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15TH AT 6:30 PM AT THE HCRS BUILDING ON 390 RIVER STREET. DIRECTIONS ARE ATTACHED. (This is Priscilla’s office building and we can use the Board Room.)
