Philip Nash

RITES FOR PE NASH, USN

Military funeral services for Philip E Nash, 21, of Claremont, NH, a victim of a hit and run accident in Florida September 7, were conducted Tuesday at the McCusker Funeral Home in Claremont by the Reverend Louis Reed, rector of Old Trinity Church in Charlestown, NH.

Burial was in Walpole, NH cemetery. The flag was presented to Mr and Mrs Nash by Lyle Green, a shipmate from the USS Hawkins, who served as escort from the naval base at Mayport, Fla.

Philip was the son of Robert and Barbara Lee Nash, formerly of Rutland. He was the grandson of Mr and Mrs Newell B Lee of 40 Easterly Avenue and the nephew of Mrs John A Johnson of 54 Church Street.

Mr and Mrs Wendell Fransen attended the funeral of Philip E Nash, son of Mr and Mrs Robert A Nash of Charlestown, NH on Tuesday afternoon, September 12, at the McCusker Funeral Home in Claremont, NH. Philip E Nash, 21 year old sailor attached to a Mayport based destroyer in Florida was found dead Thursday on US 301. He had apparently been crushed to death by a truck-trailer while hitchhiking to Georgia to take a plane home to see his family. He hadn't been home since a year ago August. He had talked with them on the phone a few days previously but at that time wasn't sure of being able to come home.

It is such a tragic thing to lose an only son at the age of 21. The sympathy of all go out to his relatives, friends and buddies.

Sailor Killed By Hit-Run Truck

Fernandina Beach, Fla (AP) The body of a sailor attached to a Mayport based destroyer was found yesterday on US 301.

Trooper Paul E Sanchez of the Florida highway patrol said the sailor, 21 year old Philip E Nash of Claremont, NH apparently had been crushed to death by a truck -trailer.

A broken air valve was found near the sailor's body. Sanchez said the driver of a truck that bore signs of such an accident was being held for investigation at Folkston, GA but denied having seen Nash.

The sailor was attached to the USS Hawkins.

After the early teenage years and the squeaking was pretty much behind us both Phil and I wound up with fairly deep voices. We used to try and outdo each other by singing Herbie Reed's bass part on "You'll Never Know." You can listen to it here.
