I was stunned to learn from Barbara's husband that she died December 24, 2007. She had a neurological disease. That is all I know.
I had visited her several times in MD because Pris' mother lived nearby. Since her mom died, I have not heard from her except for Christmas cards. I received one in 2007!

I am hearing about this for the first time, and am also stunned. Barbara was a wonderful gal and a fabulous clarinetist. I think of her every time I go to an All State concert. What a tragedy to lose her so early.

I worked with Barbara at Idlenot while we were in high school, and always admired how efficient and personable she was to customers and workers alike. Her great smile and positive attitude always made going to work easier and while there more enjoyable.

Barbara graduated from UVM in 1963 with a degree in mathematics. She immediately went to Maryland to work for the National Security Agency (NSA). She held many positions there over the years, including cryptanalyst and toward the end of her career as Branch Chief responsible for preparing the annual U.S. Security Status Report for the Director of NSA and the President of the U.S. She was well respected as an analyst and as a manager. She was characterized as a tough, but fair manager, always giving her people chances to air their grievances. She would then calmly explain her decisions. Her demeanor was very impressive in dealing with a multitude of people and situations. She retired in September of 1994.

She married John Maynes in 1964 and they divorced in 1978 with no children. She married James Thomas in 1989.

The last year of her life was not easy. She was ill for most of 2007. I retired in May of 2006 so I was able to travel from Colorado to spend two weeks of April, May, June, July, August and September helping her. We moved her husband into an assisted living facility in May of 2007. I spent all of October, November and December with her and I was holding her hand when she died. Barbara will always be my "Big Sister."... the VERY BEST! Even though we had some difficult situations to deal with those last months, we had good times together, laughed a lot and recalled a lot of good times we had together over the years. She gave me a small plaque a few years ago, which I read every day. It says "Sisters nurture each others dreams." She nurtured mine. We miss her.
