As many of you may remember, Sue & I were very good friends from 3rd grade through high school and beyond. I was her maid of honor when she married Bob Fullam and she was in our wedding party. I even borrowed her wedding gown for the special occasion. We kept in touch over the years and visited her and her second husband, Fred Allen, in Rock Hill, SC. I was saddened to learn that she passed away on December 20, 2001, just after her 60th birthday. I certainly have many fond memories of the times we spent together!

I was greatly dismayed to learn of Susan’s passing when I accessed the class web page. This may seem a bit odd. Where am I going with this, you might ask......a small story about realizations.

I was in the Machine Cooperative Course, class of 1957. The course required us to work in the Springfield shops 5 weeks and then in High School 5 weeks from the 10th grade through Senior. Due to the lack of school time, we had to take an additional year of school, so we actually had 5 years of high school. The course was the best in the nation and we had our machinist ratings upon graduation. All this thanks to the Administration and Robert LaBonte. This curriculum didn’t allow much interfacing with the general student body, so I didn’t have much interest with girls; too busy and occupied.

One day about Spring 1957, I think it was a travel date for the SHS baseball team to perhaps Bellows Falls, a rare occurrence for me. While the game was being played, I was leaning against a car by myself which must have been several minutes when two girls caught my eye, they were setting on the grass in front of me about 100 feet away, looking at me; one was Susan Knight whom I later identified. I got woke up to girls! She was a beautiful girl and big eyes. I was too “shy” to say HI. The next day I saw her at school and wanted to talk with her more, but didn’t. Kicked myself since..............

I knew her father Bud Knight as my father and I would pick him up and drive to the Fellows Gear Shaper and to work. They lived across the road from the Union and Park Street intersection upstairs in an apartment.

After graduation, being in the Air Force, married and pursuing life’s endeavors all has been in the past. Until, I accessed the SHS class pages and looked at the classmates that passed on. I came across Susan Knight’s notice.....I was shocked! Such a nice person, so young; I wondered what happened. On the Internet I saw she was married and divorced to Robert Fullam of Springfield and then married a John Allen of Rock Hill, SC where she died in 2001, 60 years young. I have no information about an obituary, cause and where she is. I often passed close by Rock Hill SC on my travels to Georgia and Florida just off I-77 from 2001 until today.

I noticed in the SHS class 1959 there was a statement by a long time friend of Susan’s, perhaps by her friend, the girl sitting with Susan when I noticed them and also if so, she may know more than I. I can’t access any information on the web sites. After some 50 years, thoughts revert often to the past, which was yesterday.....you wonder what, why and how. I’m very deeply saddened to know; somehow it hit me. Anyone who knows anything, let me know via the 1957 SHS page or the 1959 page. Thanks.  Tom Chase '57
