Mary Ploof Austin was my next door neighbor. When my parents moved back to Springfield they built a house in the field below the Ploof's. I was going into the fifth grade at South School so it was nice having someone my own age to hang out and ride the bus with. Mary and I had a lot of good times over the school years with fond memories of South School and the High School and going to lunch at J.J. Newberry's. For 25 cents you got a hot dog, coke, chips and had 2 cents left for 2 hot balls. After Mary married we lost touch and I had just made contact with her in 1975 just before she died unexpectedly. She is fondly remembered.
