I lived on the West Side of Charleston from birth until March 15, 1956. A fourth sibling had just been added to our family. Mom and Dad decided we needed a house. We moved to Nitro.

The neighborhood we lived in on Monongahela Street on the West Side is now part of I-64. I was so sad to leave my friends. My sister had two years in at St Anthony's. She would bring her friends home to play. They were really nice. I was all set to go the St Anthony's. But then we moved to Nitro.

I was then enrolled at St Francis of Assisi School in September 1956. Dad took me to the Convent and I met Sister Josetta. I played on the playground with some kids afterwards. You might have been one of those kids.

When school started, I made friends right away. You probably did not know you were helping a traumatized 6 year old adapt to a new environment.

You more than compensated for my sadness. You made me your friend. You made me happy. Thank you from here to eternity
