On March 28, 2007, Michele Melik died in a tragic accident at the young age of 41 while kayaking on Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona, U.S.A. She was with her 15 year old son, Christopher, and boyfriend at the time of the accident. Michele is survived by her loving family, her son, Christopher; her parents, Bernie and Alfreda; two sisters: Susan (Paul) and Roberta (Tony); grandmother, Mary Melik; as well as many family and close friends. If anyone was the quintessential hiker, it was Michele, having hiked over 15,000 miles since she began at the age of 15 on her first hike in Jasper, Alberta, Canada with her Father. In 2006 alone, Michele had hiked in Peru, Alaska, Jasper and Hawaii. Michele's spirit of adventure also carried over into her chosen profession, graduating in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta (U. of A.) at a time when engineering was still predominantly a male profession. Prior to her death, Michele worked as a project manager for Stuart Olson Construction in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Being the kind spirit that she was, Michele was always thinking of others, whether it be climbing into a garbage bin in her dress, nylons and high heels to rescue a litter of abandoned kittens, or volunteering a minimum of 15 hours a week as a coach, referee and co-ordinator of student referees for the Knights of Columbus mini-basketball program (ages 9-16) in St. Albert, Alberta, Canada where she grew up. Michele's short life on earth has touched the lives of many. She will be truly missed, but never forgotten. Godspeed, Michele! Two years have passed since Michele's tragic loss of life. Her memory lives on. She has created a path for her son, Christopher, leading to a promising future with many of Michele's former classmates to guide him along.Kevin Willas (Ted Burrell (Legally Changed July 25, 1986))
Ten years have passed since her loss, but she remains with us in spirit and memories.

Fifteen years have passed since we lost Michele. It was after her celebration of life service on April 9, 2007 that I initially met my stepdad, who passed away on August 17, 2022 at 96, and my mother passed away on November 22, 2022 at 95.
