Northeast to Lose "East" from name - also donations raised total Posted Tuesday, October 6, 2009 04:38 PM During the tour at Northeast Middle on Friday, we learned that the district is considering (in fact sounded like they already made the decision) to drop the "East" from their name. Personally, I think when they decided to call it Northeast, they probably had lots of discussions and debates and that it was a wise group of people that came to an intelligent compromise. The school now directly feeds to North only, so it really IS North Middle School. (By the way if you do not already know this, the "old" North Jr High is now owned by the Shriners, so anyone that attended North Jr -- their school really was turned into a "shrine" -- how poetic is that?) But back to East -- The school lockers are purple, the mascot is a Viking...I get that they want all that Purple Pride. Don't blame them a bit. But for those of us that attended East Jr or East Middle, I feel like some remnant of what it used to be is respectful of our time there. Until they paint the sign, we have a chance to voice our opinions with the district. I am getting confirmation that there truly is a plan to do this, so for right now, please just let me know if you even care. Seems like we all cared about our time at East. Since the district saw fit to throw us 4 ways to the wind, it seems like now it would be nice if they could preserve just a little piece of "what was". We have the building...and afterall "what's in a name?" The Eagles are all gone, the red and gold is gone (for the most part), the Rising Sun is no longer the School Yearbook....What do you say, Eagles, do we want to lose the last piece of that legacy? Do you care? Even if they do "win" the name change...we have a nice little surprise for them. When we present them with the funds from the "letter jacket letter sale" I am having a plaque made that says "Donated by the 30 Year Reunion of the Parkway East Jr Class of 1979"! They may try to exterminate us, but the mighty Golden Eagles will live on! And just in case you wondered, we raised $323 on the letters! Thanks everyone.

RE: Northeast to Lose "East" from name - also donations raised total Posted Wednesday, October 7, 2009 03:43 PM OK - I got the scoop on this. There have been "discussions" at the school level about changing the name, but it has not gone to committee discussion, nor has it been brought to the Superintendent level. The process then would be to go to the school board and there would likely be some public discussion. I was given the name of people to contact at the district to express my opinion, early in this process. If anyone wants that contact info, let me know and I will share it individually with people. We can't go getting all riled up about this since it might turn out to be nothing...and maybe most of you think...it's just a name, so who cares?
