Lois E. (Mabus) Costigan

April 28, 1941 ~ May 14, 2021 (age 80)

Lois E. Costigan, age 80 of Newport, Minnesota passed away unexpectedly on May 14, 2021 from complications due to Covid 19 with her family by her side.

A celebration of her life will be planned at a later date.

Lois was born April 28, 1941 in Buffalo Center, Iowa to Maynard and Ione (Banta) Mabus.  She grew up in Buffalo Center and graduated from high school in 1960.  She completed her secretarial training at  Mankato Commercial College started working for Green Giant in Le Sueur, Minnesota in the human resources department.

She was married to her longtime sweetheart, Larry Costigan on September 15, 1962 in Buffalo Center at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  They lived in Mankato, Minnesota and Manhattan, Kansas where Larry completed his education.  They moved to Newport in 1966 where she worked as a secretary at various places through the years.  She loved collecting teddy bears, fishing, playing cards with friends and visits to the casino.

In 1976 Lois and her family started collecting crystals which eventually she and Larry turned into a their business, which they called Costigan’s Minerals in 1980.  They travelled extensively which allowed them to find unique minerals throughout the US.  They attended trade shows across the Midwest and made countless friends that she cherished.

She also worked closely with Park High School Athletics where she oversaw many areas including data organization, ticketing and scoring to name a few.

They enjoyed winters in Tucson, Arizona for the last 20 years.  She had a spunky, straight forward personality who always had something witty to offer.  She had a kind heart and will be dearly missed.

Survived by her husband of 58 years Larry; son Brian (Michele); granddaughters Ashley and Alexa; sisters Arliss Hove and Eleanor Winter and many nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents.

I'm sorry for coach's loss. I met Lois a few times; the place sticks in my mind is the little park in Newport. The Cositigans had a nice picnic for one of the Cross Country teams. One of my favorite memories is how he would put up with a bunch of kids (angel= like the hockey players on our team - they joined to get in shape - they were waving from a house being constructed). Coach could be a no nonsense kind of guy if he was disrespected. I saw him pick up a kid with one hand in the school hallway and slam him into a locker. Mental note; don't smart off to coach.

Hot day! We have a house full until a house can be bought or built. Terrible time for my daughter and husband to be looking. But, get to spoil the grandkids! Pop? Ice Cream? Fishing? Swimming? Candy? I'm playing over and over the song by Roger MIller, You can't rollerskate in a buffalo herd!  I love being a grandpa (and a great grandpa)!

Dave lucky you, that's the true meaning of a home. As we all know life goes by way too fast and you are creating some special lasting memories for you and the kids. Enjoy the sunshine outside and that of your family.

Watched the baseball games this week for the Wolfpack to try to get to state.
Yesterday they had to beat Eagan twice.

They did it!   Congrats to the team.  I have a grand nephew on the team.

It seems the weeks and months can pass quickly, even when the hours and days can seem slow.  I have been having a series of "lost weekends", not by drugs or alcohol, but from bus driving Fridays and Saturdays.  I often will lay down for the night at 4am or 5am, when the sun begins its overtures to the dawn.  I enjoy doing it, and the money is good, but it can be exhausting after a 40 hour work week to add another 20 or so hours.  So I will often wake up around 10am Sunday, just in time to access the livestreaming of our church River of Life Church in Hastings.

I am thankful for Sundays, especially when I can drag myself out of bed and actually attend the service in person.  With such a schedule as I have been keeping, I can better understand why God made the Sabbath and commanded that it be a day of rest.

And while I am musing about the passing of time, and ultimately of life, . . . Although it is yet three years into the future, have there been any discussions for a 50 year reunion?  While I am not a good leader or organizer, I will gladly offer my services as a "go-fer", a messenger, or some kind of forced labor for the planning and execution of the event.

Hi Classmates - I am organizing a classmate kayak/canoe paddle in September.  Some open dates for me currently are September 19 and September 25 and 26.  I am able to supply some canoes and paddles if those interested in paddling don't have their own.

I am thinking of  paddling in the Grey Cloud island area, or starting at Lion's Park in St. Paul Park.  Essentially paddling on the Mississippi but as much as possible paddle in the backwaters versus the main current.  However,  I am open to other locations. Probably something like a 2+ hour easy paddle, perhaps bringing a lunch or we could do an eat/drink at a local restaurant afterward.

Please let me know if there is an interest.  Thanks!

Steve Hardy - Thank you so much for volunteering your services for the next reunion!  We can use your help!  I haven't been considering the 50th reunion event yet.

Yvette Nierenhausen stepped in and led the planning and organizing of the 45th reunion and did a awesome job!  Thanks Yvette!! :)

FYI - I am the maintainer of the class bank account.  I plan to review the class bank account balance, ongoing website maintenance costs, and the costs of the last reunion, in order to verify we have the funds to continue with this website, and to estimate the costs of next reunion.

Currently my volunteer time is constrained since I work full-time and am working on certifications, coach paddlesport  classes in the summer, and am a member of a paddlesport club board.

I will help with the next reunion as much as I can - perhaps I will be retired by then :)

Jeff, put me on the list for kayaking/canoeing on any of those dates.
It sounds like a fun time.i also have an extra kayak if someone needs one to use. Please keep me informed as to what the others decide for a day.
In the meantime I wish everyone a safe and healthy September.

Thanks for the birthday wish, Bob! Tom, it took a little while before I understood your appreciative statement to Bob. And Ted, enjoy your aging! I read in mental health studies that is one of the secrets to healthy aging (appreciate your uniqueness, experiences, and capabilities). It is this shifting culture that I can not understand.

Thanks Dave.  I look forward to a more acute sense of hearing with the ability tune into my phone and maybe TV directly.  And having vision that will be near perfect that won't age anymore.  Getting older isn't all bad, especially w decent insurance!   Rejoined the health club w silver sneakers.  Saving $$.
