Statesville, North Carolina
Morningside School began in a two-room framed building known as the Colored Free School. It was established in 1891. In the early 1900's, the school burned down. Classes were held in different facilities throughout the community. In 1921, a new school was built on Green Street and was named Morningside. In 1942, a six-room high school was built on the corner of Garfield and Elm Streets and named Morningside High School. In 1971, the Garfield Street facility was renamed Alan D. Rutherford, in honor of the last principal of Morningside High School.
