Montagu Springs
Montagu Springs is extremely well organised, spotless and very well maintained. If you are wanting to go to a self-catering, affordable resort, within two hours drive from Cape Town and you feel the need to get closer to nature, peace and tranquillity, Montagu Springs is the perfect break from city life.
ACTIVITIES
Pedal cars, imported from Italy, are great fun for Mom, Dad and Tiny Tot, and can be hired at our offices. Maximum passengers are 2 adults and 2 children. Please note that an adult must accompany children under 12.
A variety of bicycles are available for hire. For the more energetic, mountain bikes are available.
There are three tennis courts in the Resort for your enjoyment. At night, the floodlights are available on a coin-operated timer. Should you have forgotten your gear, tennis rackets are available at the office against a refundable damage deposit, while the balls are for sale. Bookings for tennis courts are done at the office for one-hour periods, on the hour.
Braai (barbecue) wood and Blitz (firelighters) are available for sale at the office. Should the office be closed, the security kiosk has ample stock. Guests are kindly requested to extinguish their fires after use.
Should the braai (barbecue) at your chalet be too small to accommodate all your braai(barbecue) guests, we have six large braai(barbecue) drums on wheels, which you may borrow.
Trips to Lochie's Farm depart from the tennis court area, and are to be booked and paid for at the office. Make bookings early to avoid disappointment. During September to April, trips depart daily at 10h00 and again at 16h00, while during May to August, trips depart daily at 11h00 and again at 15h00. Trips are dependent on a minimum of 12 participants, so enquire early at the office. The total return trip is 2 hours. The trip includes riding on a trailer to nearby Lochies Farm where Lochie, complete with feathered hat, will give you an informative tour of the farm. Coffee, tea or the local Muscadel and koeksisters will be served in the garden. Farm produce is on sale at a small kiosk.
The world famous tractor - trailer trip on Niel Burgers farm, Protea, in the Karoo, to the summit of the Langeberg Mountains is something to be experienced. The farm is located ½ hours drive from our offices, for which you will need your own transport. Once at the farm, you climb aboard the trailer and are transported into the "heavens". At the top of the mountain you are provided with fruit/fruit juice and Muscadel to warm you. It is important to be warmly dressed, as it is chilly on the top of the mountain. The trip is approximately 3 hours from the farmhouse to the summit and back to the farmhouse. Trips operate on Wednesdays at 10h00 and on Saturdays at 10h00 and again at 14h00, and are limited to 60 persons per trip. Either after the return of the morning trip, or prior to the departure of the afternoon trip, lunch of potjiekos, potbrood and coffee can be ordered, which is eaten outdoors in a lovely mountain setting. An early morning or late afternoon stroll through Lover's Walk is a must for nature lovers. Tortoises, rock rabbits, guinea fowl, Egyptian geese and sometimes baboons and buck will be there to meet you, along with over 200 different varieties of birds indigenous to this area. The walk meanders along through the mountains, crossing the river many times, and passes some of the favourite haunts of rock climbers. It is a one hour walk through the Kloof to the village. Do not forget to sport your walking shoes.
There are several well-known hiking trails in the area and Montagu is also a famous rock-climbing venue. For details, enquire at The Old Mill, which is located on the Lovers Walk hiking trail or at the Montagu Tourism office in the village.
Guests have access to a nine-hole golf course, which the Montagu Golf Club invites you to use as often as you wish. The course is 1 kilometre from the Resort. Enquire at the Golf Club.
Squash courts are available in the village. Your own racket and balls are required. The key can be obtained at the Uitspan Café, which is located in Bath Street in the village.

The Wine Boutique is located adjacent to the Total Garage in Ashton (7 kilometers from Montagu) and represents 25 Wine Cellars and Estates from the world-renowned Robertson Valley. All wines retail at their cellar prices, and there are over 200 labels to choose from. They are open daily from 09h00 to 17h00, including public holidays, but are closed on Sundays. The Robertson/Ashton/Montagu wine route is well known throughout South Africa. The more famous Wine Estates are Van Loeveren, Graham Beck, Zandvliet, Roodezandt, Soetwynboere and Muscadelboere and Weltevrede. Detailed brochures with maps are available at our office.
The famous Hot Mineral Pools are located at the Avalon Springs Hotel, adjacent to the Montagu Springs Resort. Montagu Springs is separately owned and independent of the Avalon Springs Complex and Hot Mineral Pools. Guests at Montagu Springs, AT AN EXTRA COST, have access hereto. Swimming times are from 08h00 to 23h00. Pool tickets are available at the Avalon Springs pool kiosk. Those suffering from arthritis, rheumatism, and other muscular ailments, benefit from the warmth and properties of the water.
There is a Health Spa at the Avalon Springs Complex. Book at the Avalon Springs Hotel reception.
Within the village there is a nature garden, where weary city dwellers can relax and bird watchers may observe birds from within a hide.
The most popular restaurants are Route 62 Coffee Shop, Romanos, Jessicas, Prestons and The Four Oaks.
Three cold water pools are located in the Resort for your enjoyment. The half-sized Olympic swimming pool in the Plettenberg Chalet area has a children's playground next to it.



There are two types of Plettenberg Chalets. Large Plettenberg Chalets have two bedrooms and a common bathroom, accommodating four persons.
Small Plettenberg Chalets have one main bedroom and two bunk beds in the second bedroom to accommodate children under 13. They have a common shower.
The 87 Plettenberg Chalets are located in idyllic garden surroundings. The clever use of trees and shrubs creates intimacy and provides privacy. Each chalet has its own thatched umbrella with built in table and braai (barbecue) facilities.
In the area of the Plettenberg Chalets, is a half-sized Olympic swimming pool with pool lounging furniture and children's playground, including a slide, swings, jungle gym, merry-go-round and swing-around. The gardens meander down to the bird and waterfowl houses on the banks of the Keisie River, which flows through the Resort. Each Plettenberg Chalet has a framed collage showing guests the names and types of feathered friends you will be likely to encounter while you stroll through the park. There are public phone booths for use by guests.
Josmont Heights
The double storey Josmont Height Chalets are split into two types of accommodation. The upstairs sections offer spacious honeymoon suites, with lots of privacy and a large private patio balcony with built in braai (barbecue). Retractable awnings over the patio furniture protect you from the sunshine, and you will fall in love with the majestic 180-degree mountain and vineyard views. The downstairs sections have two bedrooms, sleep four persons and provide similar views with a private outdoor-garden area, including braai (barbecue) facilities. Lush garden vegetation and large shrubs predominate. Guests at Josmont Heights enjoy the use of either the swimming pool located at The Golden Terraces, or the half-sized Olympic swimming pool, located in the Plettenberg Chalet area. There are five Honeymoon Chalets upstairs, and four downstairs chalets that sleep four persons.
The Villas
Please note:
1. Villas are serviced daily at no extra charge on tenants request, and receive towels, soap, shampoo, shower gel, dishwashing liquid, and dish cloths.
2. All other chalets are self-catering. Bring your own towels, soap, dishcloths and washing up liquids.
3. Chalets accommodate 4 persons only, other than honeymoon suites.
4. Bedding, air-conditioning, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans are supplied.
5. No pets are allowed.
6. Credit card facilities are available.
7. Groups (5 or more chalets) have free use of our Conference Centre.
8. DURING THE WEEK, Conference groups have their chalets serviced daily at no extra charge, and receive a hand towel, bath towel and soap.
Golden Terraces
The 17 Cape Dutch styled chalets, Golden Terraces, with their brick paved driveways, are located adjacent to the vineyards and fruit orchards. These cottagey chalets each sleeps four persons and are wheelchair accessible. Golden Terraces chalets have two bedrooms and a bathroom with a bath-shower. The lounge has a cosy fireplace, which is perfect for chilly winter evenings. The large patio leading off the living area incorporates a spacious built in braai, positioned under retractable awnings to protect you from 365 sunshine days per year, and provides outstanding views of the surrounding mountains and orchards. The centrally located recreational area includes a large swimming pool surrounded by palm trees and a communal braai (barbecue) facility for use by groups, which can accommodate two sheep on a spit.
