After I graduated from Southern Illinois University, I joined the Peace Corps and spent two years teaching in Gondar, Ethiopia. After my return, I was Assistant Program Director at the Illini Union at the University of Illinois for two years. At Illinois I started graduate school and eventually received my Ph.D. in applied linguistics. Since then I have taught at the college level in Canada, Spain, Puerto Rico (14 years), Ohio, and Virginia (17 years).
In 1969, I married Julie, and in 1974 our daughter Erika was born in Barcelona, Spain. Julie also taught at the college level during our various stops. In 2002, Julie changed professions and received her Ph.D. in instructional technology from the University of Virginia. She is currently an instructional designer/technologist for online learning at Bemidji State University. Our daughter Erika graduated from the University of Virginia and then received her Ph.D. from Oregon State University in zoology. After a two year post-doc at Cornel University, she married Julian. They had met in graduate school at Oregon State. Julian is from Argentina and has his Ph.D. from OSU in hydrology. They are currently living in Concordia, Argentina where he has a post-doc.
In 2004, we moved to Bemidji, Minnesota (75 miles from the Canadian boarder) when Julie accepted the position at BSU. Because all my courses were online, I was able to relocate to Bemidji and maintain my full-time faculty position in Virginia. Last May I retired from the college in Virginia, and this fall I will teach part time for Bemidji State.
We love life in the Northwoods in spite of the long cold winters. During the summer we kayak and play tennis, and we cross-country ski during the winter.
