Edward "Bud" Capko

July 2, 1942 - February 1, 2016

CORNELL — Edward A. "Bud" Capko, 73, of Cornell, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, at Evenglow Lodge in Pontiac.
  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at St. Michael the Archangel Parish Church in Streator with the Rev. Father Jacob Rose officiating.
  Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Solon-Telford Funeral Home in Streator. The rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m.
  Burial will be in Cornell Cemetery in rural Cornell. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Kurt Russow, T. J. Corrigan, Jake Capko, and Justin Fry, and nephews, Tim Kenney and Marty Hatzer.
  Born July 2, 1942, in Streator, he was the son of Andrew and Ruth (Weiss) Capko. He married Helen L. Hatzer on Jan. 25, 1964, at St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Streator. She survives in Cornell.
  He also is survived by daughters, Julie (David) Russow, of Cornell, and Jodi (Michael) Less, of Morris; a son, Ed (Dana) Capko, of Morris; grandchildren, Kurt Russow, Jackie Russow, Kate Russow, Emily Russow, Dana Corrigan, T. J. Corrigan, Haley Corrigan, Sydney Corrigan, Jada Less, Jake Capko and Jana Capko; sisters, Patricia Ellis, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Shirley (Chuck) Vaughan, of Manitowoc, Wis.; and his stepfather, Robert Smelcer, of Phoenix, Ariz.
  He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Richard Capko and Jerry Capko.
  Born and raised in Streator, Bud attended St. Stephen's Grade School and graduated from Streator Township High School in 1960.
  He was employed in the family business, Valley View Industries, for over 47 years and held various positions, retiring in 2013.
  Bud was a member of the former St. Stephen's Church and currently belonged to St. Michael the Archangel Parish. He was a member of the Monsignor George A. Dzuryo Knights of Columbus Council 790 and the 4th Degree Streator Assembly 2109 of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Sons and Friends of Erin, serving as the club's secretary for many years. Bud served on the Cornell Grade School Board of Education and on the C. A. R. E. S. Board.
  Bud was an avid softball player and spent many summer nights at Owens Field. He was also a Notre Dame fan and enjoyed watching the Fighting Irish whenever he could. After hanging up his glove, his favorite sporting events to watch were anything that his grandchildren were involved in.
  Bud was a hard-working family man who enjoyed "assisting" his wife in the yard and garden. Bud and Helen had just celebrated 52 wonderful, memory-filled years of marriage.
  He will be dearly missed by his loving family and by his close friends and special caregivers, Whitey and Sandi Hamilton.
  Memorials may be directed in Bud's name to Catholic education.
