James J. Lemler 64, former Laurium Chief of Police passed away on Wednesday evening January 10, 2007, at his home.
He was born on August 24, 1942, in Chicago, Illinois, a son of Donald and Helen (Matas) Lemler.
He moved to Streator, Illinois, as a child and later lived in New Orleans, Louisiana.
On September 2, 1961, he was married to the former Elaine Carlson in Streator, Illinois.
James was a member of the Streator High School Class of 1960. He later attended the New Orleans Police Academy and graduated in 1964. He also received his degree in criminal justice from Suomi College in Hancock.
In 1964 he moved to Laurium, Michigan, and worked for the Village of Laurium Police Department for 30 years and retired as Chief of Police of the Department.
He enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren and loved to do things around the house, yard work and his computer.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Knights of Columbus, and Police chiefs of Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his father Donald and his son Craig.
Surviving are his wife Elaine, a daughter Lori (Michael) Hendrickson, a son Edward (Colleen) Lemler of Calumet, and three grandchildren--Michael, Logan, and Austin. He was also survived by his mother, Helen Lemler of Streator, a brother Edward (Lisa) Lemler of Mobile, Alabama, and a sister-in-law Barbara Mills of Calumet. He is also survived by several aunts,uncles, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, January 13, 2007, in the Sacred Heart Church in Calumet with Fr. Abraham Mupparathara officiating.
Burial was in the Lake View Cemetery.
