John Mateer

July 5, 1942 - September 12, 2017

John Mateer, 75 , passed away at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, in Streator.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1p.m., Saturday, Sept 16, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Leonore.  The Rev. Fr. Ray Gurthrie will officiate.  Burial will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Joe Thomas, Bob Thomas, Ken Mateer, Devin Mateer, Colton Beard, and Kaitlin Thomas.  Visitation will be from 11a.m. to 1p.m. Saturday at Elias Funeral Home.

John was born July 5, 1942, In Streator.  He was the son of Michael and Cleo (Hinderer) Mateer.  He married Patricia J. Sabino on May 14, 1966.  She passed away Jan. 22, 2011.

John is survived by his children, Anthony Scott (Lori) Mateer of Streator, Thomas Allen (Amanda) Mateer of Towanda, and Amy Susanne (Robert) Thomas of Streator; and grandchildren, Ashley Mateer, Joseph Thomas, Anthony Mateer Jr., Kaitlin Thomas, Hayden Mateer, Cassidy Thomas and Mia Mateer.  He also is survived by a brother, Michael (Edna) Mateer of Tennessee.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat; and a daughter, Melissa Jean Mateer, in infancy.

John attended local grade schools, graduated from Streator high in 1960, and attended Milwaukee School of Engineering.  He was a glass cutter at Libbey-Owens-Ford for over 22 years, retiring in 1991.

John was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Parish, the Knights of Columbus, where he served in the Third Degree, and Sandy Ford Sportsman's Club.
