She was born Aug. 7, 1953, in Streator, daughter of Virgil and Catherine Ritchie Smith. She married Mike Pelton on March 14, 1992, in Normal.

Surviving are her husband of Normal; her mother of Streator; two daughters, Brandy (Mike Levin) Jewett Levin and Melissa (Lynn Wells) Jewett, both of Normal; two stepdaughters, Julie (Jason Miller) Pelton of Omaha, Neb., and Amy Pelton of West Frankfort; and one stepson, Brian (Sarah Watson) Pelton of Bloomington. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Jacob and Alex Levin, Kayla and D.T. Thomas, Kendyl Pelton and Jack Miller; five sisters, Joyce Wells of Kellyville, Okla., Janet (Richard) Dodge and Mary (Tom) Reel, both of Streator, Ann (Michael) Fitzgerald of Normal and Julie (Dan) Vial of Blackstone; and six brothers, Duane "Butch" (Marjey) Smith, Kenny (Pam) Smith, Dave (Wendy) Smith and Joe (Melissa) Smith, all of Streator,  Larry (Dixie) Smith of West Virginia and Tom (Theresa) Smith of Champaign.

She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Ron Smith.

Rita worked at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington for 19 years.  She loved her family and all five of her "children." She especially enjoyed spending time with all of her grandchildren.

Memorial services were March 17 at East Lawn Funeral Home in Bloomington. There was no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. Private entombment will be at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Bloomington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Advocate BroMenn Hospice or Susan G. Komen Foundation.
