Cars are a part of our life
Posted Sunday, March 6, 2011 01:41 AM

My first car, purchased for $150 the summer after graduation was a '61 Rambler - not very pretty, but very dependable.   The one with the most personality - a 60's VW van.  It went anywhere, albeit not very fast.  Good times in that old van!

Doug's pride and joy - his '67 Pontiac La Mans.  He gets it out in the spring time (puts a few more dollars into it) and drives it on the nice days.

The first car I bought was a 58 Volks Beetle. Had a lot of fun in it and have had other Beetles and VW vans over the years. I even have an 81 VW camper van now. I ended up trading that 58 Beetle for a 67 Chevelle SS in 73. I still have the Chevelle and it will pin you to the seat with it's original big block 396. I did build the engine up in the early 70's with several goodies to make it snap your neck and put a smile on your face :-)

That Chevelle is sweet! As far as VW's - everyone I know who has had one has great memories of them!

Thanks Yvonne, it's kinda been my favorite toy for a while. I do like your La Mans. Late body styles of the sixties will never be re-created again. Nor the simplicity of working on the engines. I pop the hood and see a classic piece of Detroit big block cast iron, a water pump, fan, alternator and a few other things. Not a mashed up bunch of wires, sensors, electronics and hoses like our newer cars, which are much harder to work on. Will I ever sell it? I don't know, but as many times I've been asked that, my favorite reply has been..... "You wouldn't want to write the check!" :-)

This is my 70 Nova that was my son's first car.  He hit a deer while at college and crunched up the front end.  It sat in a barn for 2 years before I got it out and started my first, and probably last restoration project.  We take it to a couple of car shows every summer and to get ice cream at the drive in on Sunday nights.  (See how little things have changed)  I'll give it back to  him someday on the condition that he won't sell it and regret selling his first car like most of us do now.

What the heck was a deer doing at college? Teaching a hunter safety course? :-)

That's a good looking car, one of my favorite body styles for the Nova. Looks like a set of Cragars on there? Those were the rage back then and still good looking today. Can't go wrong with blue. DON'T say it's an auto, stick is the only way to go. Small block or big?

I think I am in the right place. ?? I remember hitting a brand new car in the school parking lot with the back end of my parents stationwagon.  I can't remember who the car belonged to, but they almost cryed when they saw the car.  Still sorry about that!

Jeannie I took my parents family wagon into the carport poles at Carolyn Garrison house, they had it all of a couple days.  I don't think the pole was really damaged, but my ego was when my dad saw it.  It didn't want to go home.  My first car was still a family car but I was the only one old enough to drive- one day my dad came home with a pretty little Galaxie 500 ---silver with a black top- Buster Brumbach was moving up.  It had been his first car too.  The first car I bought myself was a 71 Doge Dart, bright red with a white interior...very sweet.  Michael and Laurel (Blankenship) Carpino bought it from me 2 years later.  Kenny Hicks bought our 68 Cougar so I could buy my Dart.  I guess tastes change, so far my favorite rig was my 2006 Ford Sportrac...big enough to haul grandkids, go camping and take my dog along for a ride.  4x4, it went anywhere I wanted to go.  The mountains are my home away from home so it was purfect.

Our youngest son Joe has an incredible 71 Duster, He is a mopar guy, his dad had one and so did his grandpa--Grandpa wrecked both of them...the only car that beat it was my husbands best friend's 71 Baracuda. HE wanted to carry on the tradition.  We laugh, hecrawls through Selah at a crawl, you can hear him coming across town, and it takes him awhile, neighbors are ready to call 911 until they see he isn't racing.  It doesn't mean he hasn't raced it, but were related to the cops in town...they'd never let him live it down.  Someday we will buy another old Corvette 78, what a kick...up on blocks all winter, but oh when the summer comes...
