I have fond memories of Leo. His family household, a few blocks away were like a warm refuge from my own highly dysfunctional family life. His sister was quite the beauty too. Leo and Louis Westwick and Dick Swanson and I took a memorable backpacking trip to Desolation Valley, which scratched an itch for me and got me started on backpacking as a major source of enjoyment. Leo was part of the "accelerated" cohort of students entering high school the fall after the first Sputnik launch. We felt the weight of the world on our shoulders, as if it was up to us to catch up to the Russians by ourselves. Ultimately, it didn't matter.

Leo's adult life took him away from my trajectory, I wish it hadn't...
