  • An earthquake hits Gujarat, India, causing more than 20,000 deaths
  • The Scottish Court in the Netherlands convicts a Libyan and acquits another for their part in the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 which crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland
  • Timothy James McVeigh is executed for the Oklahoma City Bombing.
  • The US ( George W Bush ) refuses to sign the Kyoto Agreement on Climate Change
  • The US Pulls Out Of 1972 Anti Ballistic Missile Treaty
  • Pharmaceutical Companies Agree to sell Aids drugs for cost price in Africa a discount of up to 90% to help the fight against Aids.
  • The 27th G8 summit takes place in Genoa, Italy. Massive demonstrations against the meeting by anti-globalization groups
  • Known simply as 9/11. On September 11, 2001 Nineteen hijackers simultaneously took control of four U.S. domestic commercial airliners. The hijackers crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in Manhattan, New York City one into each of the two tallest towers. Within two hours, both towers collapsed. The hijackers crashed the third aircraft into the U.S. Department of Defense headquarters, the Pentagon, in Arlington County, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed into a rural field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, following apparent passenger resistance.

  • Gunmen attack the parliament building in the Indian capital, New Delhi leaving At least 12 dead and 22 injured

  • 7.9 magnitude earthquake strikes the city of Arequipa and surrounding areas in Southern Peru
  • U.S. Supreme Court rules that disabled golfer Casey Martin can use a cart to ride in tournaments
  • United We Stand" benefit concert for September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks victims, held at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. Event organized and headlined by Michael Jackson, also featuring pop stars Aerosmith, Mariah Carey, The Backstreet Boys, and others
  • The Nisqually earthquake was an intraslab earthquake at 10:54 a.m on February 28, 2001, and was one of the largest recorded earthquakes in Washington state history. The quake measured 6.8 and lasted approximately 45 seconds
  • Super Bowl 2001, Baltimore defeats the NY Giants (34-7)
  • World Series 2001 Arizona defeats the NY Yankees (4-3)
  • NBA Championship 2001 LA Lakers defeat Philadelphia (4-1)
