He was a freind and a neighbor to my wife and her brother. He was killed on his second tour of duty. A very great sacrifice for his country---RIP "Cookie"

Hello, fellow clasmates & a special nod to Jack Yager who started the In Memory thread on Howard Strausbaugh.  I didn't know Howard very well --I think maybe gym class and maybe the track team.

I had not known that we lost a classmate in Vietnam.  This year a Vietnam vet buddy of mine passed along the URL to a project known as The Virtual Wall http://www.virtualwall.org/

This amazing project is a catalogue of all the names on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, their "In Country" service details and the circumstances of their deaths.  It's searchable in a number of ways, including by name, by state and by city.  If you search Ohio-Tiffin: http://www.virtualwall.org/istate/istatoh.htm#tiffin  you will find ten names including Howard's.  If you select his name, a panel opens that displays his service patches and his medals.  Select full profile and there are even more details about his Vietnam service and his death.  It's all very sobering.

Jack, thanks for bringing this to our attention. As a Vietnam Vet, I have visited the "Wall" in Washington DC on two occasions and was very moved when I found Howard's name. Dennis Painter's (a friend and 1964 grad from Columbian) name is also on the Wall. Unfortunately the guys back then were not always recognized and honored for the ultimate sacrifice they made for our county

As Howard was the only member of our class to lose his life in VietNam, I think it would be appropriate for the Class of '65 to seek to install a plaque somewhere in the halls of CHS to honor Howard. It was, afterall, a war which touched every one of us in our generation whether we served there or not. I would be willing to spearhead this effort, if needed.

RIP, Howard

Also as a Vietnam Vet, I like Ray's idea if we can get it done. Let me know if I can help.

I was a Vietnam vet as well. Ray, I like your idea and would be willing to contribute to the plaque. Maybe others would like to contribute as well and we could give the money to you at the reunion. Just a thougt.

I am a veteran as well and visited the Viet Nam Memorial and saw Howard and Denny's names. They are both heroes.I agree we should pursue doing something for our classmate.
