Following graduation from LCHS I attended UT Martin a couple of years and joined the Army in 1966 (I beat the draft). While in service I attended OCS and was commisioned in the Artillery in 1967. After my initial active tour of duty at Ft. Jackson, I attended the University of South Carolina and received a BS in Civil Engineering. Later I returned to USC and received a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. After that I spent 28 years in Federal Service, including 29 years of combined active and reserve military service. I retired from the reserves as a Lt. Col. in 1996 and from civil Service in 2006. I now have 6 years with the State of SC and may retire again soon! My most interesting duty was a 4 year stint at USC as the Assistant Professor of Military Science ('83-'87). My office was in a 200 year old building that had served as a hospital during the civil war (hence Sherman didn't burn it!).
My hobbies include collecting militaria, and running. I served as the team captain for the SC National Guard Marathon Team from 1986 -91 and continue running "shorter distances today". I completed my first "Marine Corps Challenge" (a 4 mile obstacle course) in September '09. Following my next retirement I plan to begin restoring some of my old cars.
