Capper Junior High
From the great halls of Troy I ventured West to K-State. After four years of fun and some education, a degree in clothing retailing and marketing, I came right home to put my new skills to work. But first I thought I would like to fly the skies as an airline hostess. I was too tall and had a college education. I came down to earth started a job in my field at Crosby Bros. in the ladies dept. I was paid $1.25 an hour instead of the $1.10 where most people started because I had a college education. Oh well, that was then and it is where I was the day Kennedy was killed. It being the 60's and with all kinds of new happenings in the world, Topeka decided to build one of those new style shopping centers called a mall, White Lakes. I began my 10 year career there in 1964 with a new ladies store named Dustins. I started my first day by going to market to buy merchandise for the store. Around 1971 I met Bob and we were married in Dec.1972. He is retired as a freelance court reporter. I had joined the Junior League and became very involved with volunteer work, so much so I had to quit working. (ha). I did become very involved in the Topeka community and truly enjoyed volunteering for many organizations. I almost forgot, Bob gave me a set of golf clubs and I spent many a day on the links. In 1988 I started working part time for the Museum Store at the Kansas Museum of History. That went from part time to full time and no more golf. Retail in Museums is unique to the normal field of buying and selling. I loved being a part of it. I retired in Dec. 2007 and have spent the past year and a half sleeping late, lunching, gardening, no golf, and oh yes, working on our 50th reunion. Setting up the web site and encouraging classmates to sign on has been very rewarding. So many have renewed friendships and had fun remembering those good old days at THS. My goal is to get everybody to join in the fun.
Thank you all for the kind words about this site and the 50th. It has been a learning experience for this kid of the 50's who never even dreamed of such a thing as a computer let along the internet.
Have we come a long way or what? Thanks to all of you for your support.
My memories of those days at THS are fading but, I do remember being a proctor for Mr. Gilbert in the printing dept. I learned all about the linotype machine and setting type. Now you only find them in Museums.
I remember that we only had 20 minutes for lunch and were not suppose to leave the building. How did we do it?
