We moved from Topeka to Waco, Tx. in 1972 where we learned the DQ business. We bought into our mentor's business and worked there til 1983 when we had the opportunity to purchase our own stores in Lubbock, Tx., from guess what, a guy from Topeka whose wife graduated from Topeka High!
With God's blessing and hard work we were able to accumulate 15 DQ's in various Texas towns.
Our son Brent is a wonderful man and I am so proud of him. He and his family are really involved in a cowboy church, he helped start the church. The center focus for their family is horse based, training, small shows etc.
He and his wife Melissa have 4 children Ashley, 21, Nik 20, Elizabeth, 12 and a grandchild Brady 2; which of course, makes JR and I GREAT GRANDPARENTS (I don't feel that old most of the time).
Shannon has had a challenging go of it, but is doing amazingly well. She was born with a congenital heart defect and underwent several heart surgeries. In 2000 she recieved a new heart and is doing wonderfully great, works out several times a week and looks like a muscled Mini-Mouse.
She was blessed with a wonderful brain and made the most of it. She has an accounting degree from Texas Tech and a law degree from Duke Law School.
She and her husband Kenny were able to have a son Grady with the help of a surrogate mom and God's blessing.
They bought our DQ's and her husband who is also an accountant, and is a blessing to our family 99% of the time (you know, the old mother-in-law thing).
JR and I are currently living in Red Raider country on a ranch outside Lubbock. He is in coveralls most of the time caring for his Limousin cattle with a piece of straw in his mouth, ha ha not really but you get the picture. He shows, breeds, sells & babies them (not profitable deal), but he loves it.
I mostly do things with my grandchildren which I totally love I really didn't know I could enjoy anything so much. I read, mess around in the yard (pull weeds, water my flowers, clean the pool etc.)
I do get serious once in awhile and am on the board of the Lubbock Children's Health Clinic. We are putting on Lubbock Children's Fun Fest this fall for the first time in Lubbock. It is to raise money for the non-profit organizations here. Wish me luck, I pray it is successful since a friend and I are in charge of it.
Sandy, Skip & Mary B. you won't believe it but I'm a novice at this computer stuff! Seriously, thank you so much for all the hard work! See you in Sept. Linda
