1966-1984
After graduation from HPHS in 1966 Donald Vickrey worked for the Santa Fe railroad and Allis Chalmers Corporations in Topeka and served in the National Guard. In the National Guard he spent active time in Fayetteville, NC and Washington D.C. Returning to Topeka, Don traveled throughout the USA and Canada as a musician (guitar) with several different groups based in Topeka, Kansas City, Mo. and St. Louis, Mo. After tiring of the musician's road life he returned to school at Missouri Institute of Technology (Now Devry) in 1980 and graduated in 1984 with a BSEET.
1984-1995
After graduation Don took a position as Logistics Engineer (technical writing) with Sperry Flight Systems and Honeywell Corporations in Albuquerque, NM where he met and married Carolyn. After defense dept. layoffs Don & Carolyn moved to Fort Worth where they both secured positions at the General Dynamics Corporation working to help produce the F-16 fighter. Returning to New Mexico, from 1991 through 1995 Don worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant in the Geography Department at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM where he received his Masters in applied geography, and Carolyn worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the English department where she received her doctorate degree.
1995-2015
In 1995 Don joined his brothers in Sherman, TX as a partner in Red River Property Management of TX where he is involved in Real Estate investment in Texas, New Mexico, Florida, and Arizona. Carolyn secured a position as assistant library director at Austin College. They currently reside in Sherman with their cats Moxie and Zippy where they are planning their retirement to the Phoenix, AZ area in a few years. Oh yeah, he also resides with a closet full of guitars which he is trying to remember how to play.
(Bio Finally Updated 6/1/2024)
Well we finally made that move to Arizona. We sold our property in Texas and began purchasing rental property in Arizona beginning in 2008. In January of 2015 we sold our home in Sherman TX and moved to San Tan Valley Arizona into one of our rental properties which was vacant at the time. In May 2016 we purchased a home and moved to Ironoaks County Club in Sun Lakes/Chandler Arizona. We had previously purchased a small mountain cabin as a rental property in Payson Arizona. In 2021 we decided to begin using the cabin as a summer home. In 2021 & 2022 we remodeled the existing cabin and in 2023 & 2024 we completed an addition to the cabin. Our plan is to live from November thru May in the Sun Lakes home in the valley and June thru October in the mountain home. The cabin project has been a lot of work/trips back & forth but has turned out great. Sadly Moxie & Mr. Zippy passed away in 2020 but we now have two new fur babies Ms Sasha and Mr Dasher.
Thats all for now.. until the next update. Hope all Highland Park Scotties are doing well!
(11/30/2024) Still doing some remodeling on the cabin in Payson.. adding a new carport city wouldn't let me add a garage (zoning setbacks). Heading up to Payson on Monday Dec 2nd to demo the old carport unless it turns out to be too big a job then will let someone else tackle the project. Finishing several projects around valley house.. rebuilding yard sprinkler system to make it rabbit and quail proof. If haven't been to Northern Arizona recommend highly Flagstaff, Sedona, Mogollon Rim area and White Mountains beautiful country but best in summer. Often roads impassable in winter due to snow storms.
I remember having great difficulty with chemistry and english grammer (lucky to get a C) I just couldn't understand why I needed to learn such things when I was waaay more interested in cars, motorcycles, fishing and playing guitar. I remember playing in a school talent show with a group of guys that was the 1st band and then we went on and started playing school dances around the state. Sadly? we did not make the big time. I also worked part time Senior Year at a local grocer stocking groceries and sacking. Did a lot of fishing with Jerry Thompson and Ray Huntsman at Shawnee lake we were always trying to catch that big one.
