Eateries you miss
Posted Monday, May 3, 2010 01:44 PM

Are there any places that you used to eat at that are no longer around and you miss them? Here are a few that I miss.

1. The old Grovers Smokehouse at 29th & Kansas. They used to slice the meat paper thin but stack it on a sandwich about an inch and half thick. The gals who worked there used to hear my car coming and would have my order ready for me when I walked in, a combo sandwich, fries, and a beer.

2. Poppa's Pizza and Pasta. Was behind the Gage 4 Theaters. Used to get a basket of garlic bread chips, a bowl of meat sauce, and a beer for about $4. Quick snack.

3. Alfies Fish & Chips, 8th and Jackson. They served the old english style of fish & chips, wrapped in newspaper. After having eaten there, Long John Silvers makes you want to puke.

4. Anybody remember the old Kings Drive Ins? Most of their food was okay, kinda pricey compared to McDonalds and Sonic. But they had the BEST damned onion rings. Their batter was mad with honey and crushed grahm crackers. Um-um.

I'm sure that I will think of a few more. Feel free to chime in.

Pore Richards Shrimp Po Boy, which was required eating at 2 a.m.  Great city vibe and great crowd. I knew the busboy (Alan Huxman) so had an inside advantage.

Another place that I miss was the old Brass Rail in White Lakes Mall. I worked in the catolog department with Peggy Conklins mom at Penny's after school and on weekends. Used to run down to the Rail and get hot dogs loaded with onions.

Yes, fond memories of White Lakes Mall because that was the in place to go on Saturdays so the Brass Rail is where you could get a quick pop.

If I remember correctly there were two Kings.  One was downtown and the other at 21st and Topeka Blvd, over by Noller Ford.

How about the Squat and Gobble at 29th and Adams?  That goes way back when to grade school times.  Any one remember?

I don't remember Squat and Gobble but there was a hamburger joint on the corner I think it was called Griff's or something like that...then there was the Sandy's and Smak's...A & W where you could get a frosty root beer in a glass mug.  Yum.

How about Happy Joe's Pizza and Ice Cream, something like Straw Hat Pizza and the list goes on and on.  I still hit Grover's once in awhile at Huntoon and Gage but it doesn't seem to have the same atmosphere the old joint at 29th and Kansas had.

Speaking of White Lakes, remember the Orange Julius stand too?  Really liked those but didn't get those too much but still remember them.

My gosh, we are OLD!!!

I have always though Grovers is one of the best Barb-o-que sauces  i have ever had anywhere.. .Around 1980 Dianna and I used to go to the Birds nest on 6th St for a hand cut fillet, salad with homemade Ranch and a baked potato for 6.00..

As a kid my grandparents took us to Griffs , the A frame at 29th and Adams for half price Thursday evenings. I'm not sure but I think Burgers were 15 cents. My parents were not big on Pizza Hut a few doors down but when Shakeys opened across from White Lakes we use to meet the Hayeks 3-4 times a year.

I know most everyone remembers Boyles but how about the Amusement park behind the IGA across from Griffs??

Griffs, now that's a place from the past, I remember it being packed one time when they had 10 cent hamburgers.   Any clue the real reason they shutdown the amusement park behind IGA, I think it was down close to what was it, Fremont?   We used to go thru there all the time and check it out, most of the stuff was just left there.

Shakeys, Pizza Hut and also the Sonic on 21st by the fairgrounds.    Can't forget Taco Tico across from HPHS either.

Yeah, one time at the Taco Tico, I spilled my cup over there and the security person tried to get me to clean it up.  I was so ticked off I walked out of there and don't think I went back for a long time after that incident. I could understand if I had done it on purpose, but I didn't and thought just because I was in high school didn't give them the right to treat me that way and refused to clean it up.  LOL, good times.

I remember that amusement park behind the IGA. I think it was called Funland. If I remember correctly someone got either hurt or killed on their roller coaster and they shut down shortly after that.

Someone brought up Boyles. Now if you want to go waaayyy back, they used to have their own dairy. They sold milk, ice cream, and novelty treats. I can remember back in grade school they had these HUGE ice cream sandwiches for a nickel. They sold everything from that little building in front of their amusement park. The dairy itself was on the west side of California across from Dennis Millers house in the 3500 block. The "olden days".

Anyone remember the old 3 wheeled scooters they used to sell ice cream in some of the neighborhoods?

I had heard that same story about why the old amusepark closed, but never knew if it was true.   Anyone go to the Miami in Oakland, good burgers there back then, think it may even still be open, haven't been back for awhile though.

Actually worked a Boyles Amusement park for a couple summers for 50 cents an hour the first year an got all my soft drinks for free.   More stories about that place for another time an place.

Went to Miami when it was still around a few (probably at least 5) years back but they had a fire a couple of years ago and decided not to reopen.  Alas, no more Miami Tavern.

Oh and Doug, I went to Byrd's Nest quite a few years ago and they had a burger called the British Burger that was pretty awesome too.  It had bacon, swiss cheese, and ranch dressing on the burger and I personally loved it.  Once the couple that owned it got divorced, things went downhill from there for the restaurant.  But it was a great place too.

How about DePasqualies Italian restaurant? The original place was up by the old boys industrial school just west of the Cloverleaf Drive-in. Talk about some good food! They had the best veal. For a time Vinnie also had a sandwich shop in the old Collins drive-in building on west 6th street. Killer sandwiches. They took dough and rolled it around your choice of sausage, pepperonis, whatever you wanted, then baked it. Man did I get fat eating there! Vinnie and his wife got divorced and she got the sandwich shop while he kept the restaurant. The sandwich shop did not last long after that. Vinnie moved the restaurant to the old Sirloin America building off of south Topeka Blvd. He eventually closed it and decided to go sell cars instead. What a shame.

Sambo's on 29th, Denny's on Topeka Blvd, Humble Pie and the Boiler Room on the Fifth street across from the Police station.

Village Inn on the blvd and Gage center.

What was the name of the burger place on the corner of 29th and California?

There used to be a Tastee-Freeze at 29th and California. They had good food, killer burgers. I always liked their hotdogs, they fried them. If you ever make it to Jeffersons in Lawrence they fry their hotdogs also. Not quite the same but close.

Used to go to Tastee-Freeze and get a footlong hotdog and onion rings. Got fat eating there too!
