Head Bangin' In The Car

Or, I listened to that song over and over until my ears bled!

Thought it might be interesting to hear what folks remember rocking out to in their cars back then, what their faves were then and now. Also, this would be good spot for any good concert stories anyone remebers.

Back Then

Radar Love - Golden Earring

Jessica - Allman Bros.

Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic album

Yes - Relayer album

ZZ Top - Tres Hombres album - Particularly La Grange

Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet or On Your Knees album

Ted Nugent - Stanglehold

Of course all the Hendrix and Led Zep & Thin Lizzy stuff

These Days

Eric Lindell - Low on Cash, Rich in Love album

David Arkenstone - Valley in the Clouds album

Norah Jones - Lonestar

Sublime, Sugar Ray, MXPX (there earlier stuff)

My most memorable concert experience was going down to see a bunch of groups in KC at a place called the Grove..an outside venue. Spring of '74. The line up was Climax Blues Band, Foghat, Blue Oyster Cult and Bob Seeger band headlined. I went down with Randy Lemon and Roger woodman. We didn't have tickets and Randy assured me that we would be getting tickets when we got down there (I was naive at this point). So, after about an hour of driving around the  perimeter of "The Grove" I ask again "So, where are we getting these tickets at?". Lemon pulls his car over to the side of the road and kind of has this slightly devious smile on his face. We get out and start walking along the fence and then he stops and points over towards the fence and says "Right there is your ticket". I'm watching as I see a sporadic procession of people taking their turns scurrying under a hole in the fence. The security guards had spaced themselves out too far and didn't see it. Randy and Roger went first and I remember being the last one to make it through. They saw me (I wasn't too cool or discreet about that kind of thing back then) and plugged the gap promptly. So, we were all in and started milling around the grounds. Alcohol and "herbal" tobaccos filled the air as it started to rain. It drizzled slowly for about 2 hours. As it started to let up, Blue Oyster Cult took the stage and started playing. As they did were halfway through there first song, the clouds broke and rays of sun shown down on the stage. It was an amazing sight. They couldn't have staged that better if they tried and I think they knew it. They played off that little natural special effect throughout there performance. I was an ardent BOC fan after that needless to say. One of the best and under rated live bands of the 70's IMO.

I didn’t own a car in high school so I was at the mercy of friends. If I was lucky, they would have tapes, but more than likely it was a radio. And even worse it was AM. KEWI was the big station before FM came into it’s own as a source of rock and roll in these here parts. And when KYYS, KY102 showed up, you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing it blasting out over the party. In the later years before they went off the air their slogan was, “the station you threw up with.” Wonder why? :)

And does anybody remember listening to Beaker Street with Clyde Clifford out of Little Rock, Arkansas, late at night?

Although there was many artists, bands, and songs that I was exposed to during this time, only a handful (a big handful) became the foundation for what was to be my entire future of music appreciation. It’s amazing how these albums stand the test of time. These are just a few:

Allman Brothers: Live at the Fillmore East- Many late nights with an old friend trying to figure out some of the licks off this one. “Sometime I feel like I’ve been tied to the Whipping Post.”

The Beatles: Anything I could get my hands on- If the Fab Four weren’t my favorite band when I attended HS, they are now. “All you need is love, love is all you need.”

Bob Dylan: Greatest Hits- This album just showed up at my house and never left. “Look out kid, It's somethin' you did, God knows when, But you're doin' it again.”

Rory Gallagher: Live in Europe- The late great Irish blues-rocker that sadly never got his due. “Did you ever wake up with those bullfrogs on your mind?”
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced- Guitar Virtuoso + Dylanesque Poet + Mind Expanding Hallucinogenic drugs = Jimi Hendrix. ‘Waterfall, nothing can harm me at all, my worries seem do very small with my watherfall.”

Led Zeppelin: II- Everything I would ever learn about the Lord of the Rings started here.

Lynyrd Skynyrd: 1st Album- What is it about “Sweet Home Alabama” that turns a group of reserved northerners into a bunch of rebel-yelling southerners before the first three chords are played? Sadly, that song is not on this album, but I like this LP a whole lot better than the rest of their records, CDs, tapes, mp3s . . .etc. Why you ask? Two words: FREE BIRD!!!

Neil Young: On the Beach- A dark gloomy and yet at times, hopeful album, this was and still is, the record I put on to feel better.(??) “Some are bound for happiness, some are bound for glory, some are bound to live with less, who can tell your story.”

Frank Zappa and the Mothers: Just another band from L.A.- There are better albums by FZ, but this one has some great memories for me. One summer we hung out in my garage, that had been converted into a swinging bachelor pad, replete with day-glo posters, blacklight and the ever present Pringles can. This album was played constantly, and the story of the mountain named Billy with his lovely wife Ethel, a tree, a tree, wears a little thin now, but it still can be funny as hell. “A mountain is something you don’t want to f*ck with.”

And who could forget: Bang, Captain Beyond, Bloodrock, Mountain, Ten Years After, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Focus, Nazareth, (insert your fave), Mott the Hoople, Black Oak Arkansas, Savoy Brown, Foghat, or the Cowsills?????

There were a number of concerts that I attended that still linger in my brain. Cactus @ Topeka West. Black Oak @ White Concert. REO @ Municipal Auditorium. CSNY @ Royals Stadium. Paul McCartney and Wings @ Kemper Arena.  Deep Purple @ Wichita, KS. All memorable in their own way.

What do I listen to now? Blues Traveler, Black Crowes, Los Lobos, Ramones, Smithereens, Social Distortion, Over the Rhine, Derek Trucks Band, Bad Brains, and the almighty U2.

Rose, is the song you're thinking go, "white bird in a golden age, on a winters day, alone?" That would be It's a Beautiful Day. Great song. One of those FM nuggets you never hear a lot of.

I got to see CSNY back in 70 something. Haven't been to another show since. Love to see Neil perform live, but tickets are sooo expensive.

I've seen U2 twice. The first time in 87 when they were doing the Joshua Tree tour. It seemed like they were everywhere then.

Recently we saw them in Norman with the huge effing stage that looked like a combination of a spaceship and workout track. It was great!

KEWI was it back then. That was basically what everyone listened to at the time. Country, Rock, Soul and everything else. Remember the Topeka band, the Jerms with the song Green Door? Let's see a local band try and get on regular rotation on V100!!
