I messaged back and forth with Mark also. Now if, Randy Lemon, Chris Cooper, and Randy Roach would create a profile, I'd know what's going on with all the peeps I used to hang with. Well, most of 'em.

Concerts I'd like to attend this summer, but probably won't due to the economy:

Paul McCartney in KC, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals in KC, Jackson Browne and David Lindley in KC, and the Pixies performing the Doolittle album in it's entirety also in KC.

Songwise we have: Running on Faith, Breakdown, Don't dream it's over, While my bass gently weeps, A day in the life, All along the watchtower.

What are the tunes Michelle picked again?

I am drooling reading this thread.....if not for the great sound system you all have pulled together, but...the Red Rocks.... I saw CSNY there once. Great acoustics ! Loved it.

Looked at Steve's Thur noc jam list and liked the list, although have only played a couple.

My jam list would start with  Willin' by LIttle Feat in G

Clapton - Nobody Knows you when you're down and out...nice blues in C

Raitt ?  - Raised on Robbery - a fast blues in E

Let The Good Times Roll - another blues in E

Patsy Cline - Crazy - in C

Clapton - Lay Down Sally in G

We played Beatles, Eagles, Rondstat, REO, WHO, Neil Young (Needle & the Damage Done),etc

Ok - just wanted you to know I am still out there. Have a mic and stand and a hot spot monitor and stand.  Also drummer and drums and the so so keyboard I am trying to get used to....later

I emailed Randy Lemon about the reunion and Jam session but, never heard back. He been living in Emporia for about the last 30 years. Used to see him several years back when I'd go down there for LAN/Gaming parties...we usually had lunch. I talked to him back then about playing but, I don't think he had much desire for it anymore. He had a whole garage full of PA equipment last I saw him a few years ago...he used to run a sound rental business for local events.

Michelle - that was just a list of songs I've done in the past 10 years. Our Thursday night jam group does different and mostly old blues tunes and early 60 classics.

Mercy, Mercy, Mercy

Watermelon Man

Sleepwalk

Don't let the Sun Catch you Crying

Scratch My Back

Coming Home

A couple of old Paul Butterfiled tunes I don't remember the name of.

About half the time we just improv off one another though. Its a very loose structure when we play.

Robin/Doug....fyi...here is a list and repost of the message I sent to Michelle of other songs that I've done within the past 10 years (and may actually still remeber how to play). The top half are ones that I did mostly accoustic solo versions of at an open mic night at a local nightspot here in town. The bottom half are ones that I just played on to accompany others or learned just for the fun of it.

I just sent this to Michelle to see if there were any other ones on here that she knew that we might be able to have  a little fun with is all. I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time (if any at all) learning any or working on them. If anybody else knows any...then, great, could be fun to play with..if not...then no worries.

Immigrant song-Led Zeppelin
Simple man-Lynyrd Skynyrd
Born to be Wild- Steppenwolf (Blue Oyster Cult version)
Wish you were Here-Incubus (Pink FLoyd)

I've played these before but...been longer than 10 years so they didn't make my list..lol.. did Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd but..I think Incubus one is something totally different.

Michele - I wanna hear you do the Patsy Cline song. Not that I can play it..I just like it is all. REO..I remember playing Ridin the Storm Out in a band long ago. Neil Young - Tell Me Why is the only one of his I ever played with in recent years. Along the Neil Young line..used to do a few CSN tunes years ago also. I like to jam on Down by the River or Cowgirl in the Sand.

You're right, Steve, Incubus' version is entirely different.

When we did Simple Man, in the band we start it slow and then play it hard after the first verse. Piss some dancing couples off. ("Hey honey they're playing our song . . . WTF!)

Anybody up for doing Play the funky music, white boy, by AWB or I'll take you there, by the Staple Singers?

Make it funky now!

I was just out mowing my yard when I realized it was Wild Cherry that did Play that funky music and not AWB. I they did Pick up the feces or something like that.

Hey, I am coming from Phoenix but I am into singing, playing drums or what ever need to be done to have a jam session. I played professionally for over 30 years. School, USMC, Washburn University and in local clubs for ever. Hell, I even played with myself a few times.

I will see you thee, I just need to find out where the jam session is.

Steve--the Jam Session will be at the same place as the reunion gathering for Saturday evening.  We have Reynold's Lodge reserved for the day and evening.  It is on the east side of Lake Shawnee on Tinman Circle.  You can find a map on the "35 Year Reunion" page, which is conveniently where the registration form is located!  ;-)  Glad to hear you're planning to come!  See you next month!

Hey Steve, Glad you're gonna make it. Not sure if you've looked at this entire thread to get a feel for what we're doing...its getting kind of long these days. To recap though. We've each picked out 3 songs to do. This was just to eliminate any initial awkwardness when we get together trying to figure out what each of us know how to play. That way, we'd all have something fairly rehearsed to do (yet still have time to free jam) and be on the same page for a few songs. So far we have (someone correct me if I'm wrong on any of these):

Michele
Beatles - Oh Darling - in Bb
Eagles - Desperado - in G
Jackson Brown - Runnin on Empty - in G

Doug
While My Guitar Gently Weeps -Beatles
A Day In The Life - Beatles
All Along The Watchtower - Dylan

Steve L
Tom Petty -  Breakdown  - in Am
Clapton - Runnin on Faith - in G
Don't Dream Its Over - by Crowded House - in Dsus2 (>>>>I was incorrect on the key for this in a previous post...not in Am...I had the wrong root note when I was trying to picture the chord in my head...Dsus2 is the correct key for this. Its a half step lower than what they play in this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHjT3CHvg-c

Robin opted to just focus on playing bass

Current lineup looks like this:

Robin - Bass

Michele - Keyboard and vocals

Michele's brother - Drums

Doug - Guitar/Vocals

Me- Gutiar/Vocals/keyboard

Thats pretty much where we're at I believe. There are some other lists posted of other stuff we've all done in the past as well but, we're just focusing on the 3 we've picked really.

Just post a couple or three songs you'd like to do and/or play/sing on. I think the only rule we really have on it is that you to sing your own songs that you've picked. I can't speak for anyone else but, I personally have a  very limited vocal range and memory span these days..lol.

Steve,

I got your message on what key or version of All Along the Watch Tower, Keys we dont need no stinkin keys,,, Oh wait that was Badges we dont need no stinkin Badges, but I digress.....

I play a fusion of all versions, Dylan,Hendrix,U2,NY but they all have three cords and the truth.....Am.G.F............

I saw Michelles post Last Days of May was my fav BOC track from their second Album.

I can also bring more gear if we need it.....

RE: Jam Session
Posted Friday, June 18, 2010 06:29 AM

Lol..ok...that'll work for me then. I was watching a version of Watchtower out on youtube the other day by Eric Johnson...excellent rendition...I'm kinda biased to EJ anyway though...one of my favorite players.

Last Days of May was one of my top 3 fave BOC songs..other 2 were Stairway To the Stars and 7 Screaming Dizbusters. They got just  a tad bit commerical for my taste after their live album though.

RE: Jam Session
Posted Friday, June 18, 2010 09:49 AM

Lots of Bands had great first albums then when the hit it was with weaker stuff. Foghat was great Just want make Love to you   was their best... There hit Slow Ride (boring)... Reo Speedwagon was good thru Riding the Storm out.(Golden Country My fav) but Hi infidelity forward yuck....

RE: Jam Session
Posted Friday, June 18, 2010 09:54 AM

Just got done listening to the the U2 and NY version of Watchtower.

3 chords and the truth..kk..I get it now...:)

I liked Neils version at the Dylan tribute concert (it was the cleanest one audio wise I could find on youtube)..there we're some hot performances at that...Johnny Winter had a particularly good one of Highway 61 on that series.

RE: Jam Session
Posted Saturday, June 19, 2010 07:45 AM

Went out to youtube after reading the posts here the other day (got itchy to hear some BOC) found a really good version of Last Days of May

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DTY8CITQn4

Buck Dharma...very underrated guitar player imo.

Might be a good one to just jam on after we get our main 3 knocked out. I could see everyone taking a solo on this one. Just a thought. Easy chord structure with nice bluesy undertones throughout.

How about doing "Knockin' on the Heavens Door?"

We could start off with Dylan/Clapton version and then Steve could do a Slash guitar solo in there, with Michelle doing a piano solo, too.

RE: Jam Session
Posted Monday, June 21, 2010 08:54 AM

I'm up for whatever...I'll have a listen to the slash thing...lol...we'll see:) You may be over estimating my abilities there a bit Robin..lol...but, thanks for the vote of confidence. Maybe Doug can tear it up on that one.

Got most most of the guitar work for all our songs jelled out...just a few rough edges to smooth out here and there. Gonna start on my keyboard parts for Desperado and Day in the Life next.

Went through Mama got a Sqeezebox, the Wild Cherry song you mentioned earlier, (Magic Bus(just because it fealt good to play it again..lol)  and Last days of May last weekend in case we want to do anything with them.

Steve S? Any ideas on what you want to play and/or sing yet? Are drums you're preferred instument of choice or do you play other things as well?

RE: Jam Session
Posted Monday, June 21, 2010 09:25 AM

I've learned Running on Faith, Breakdown, and While my guitar gently weeps. I'm getting better on A day in the life and can actually play a decent rendition of the 'Woke up got out of bed' part.

I've been practicing 'Oh Darling" in the key of A, although Michelle wants to do it in Bb. That's okay, all I have to do is move one fret down.

Haven't tried Desparado or Running on Empty yet.

For fun, I've been playing 'Down by the river.'

Still waiting for Steve S. to weigh in on the proceedings.

RE: Jam Session
Posted Monday, June 28, 2010 07:21 PM

I just want to make sure I have all this straight.

Beatles - A day in the life- I'm assuming the Dr. Pepper version, although Neil Young does a really cool version in which he breaks all the strings on his guitar. Yeah!

Beatles- While my guitar gently weeps- White album version? There are so many great versions of this.

Beatles- Oh Darling- Abby Road version- Key of Bb, Although I practice in A.

Eric Clapton-Running on Faith- Journeyman version - Key of G

Bob Dylan/Neil Young/Jimi Hendrix/U2/ ????- All along the watchtower- Key of A- and this is not a song about the Jehovahs Witnesses.

Crowded House-Don't Dream It's over- key of D?

Eagles- Desperado- Key of G.

J. Browne- Running on Empty- This is one I'm iffy about. The chords I've found is in the key of D, and that's what I play along with on the disc, but Michelle says G. I'm cool either way, just wanting to make sure.

Tom Petty- Breakdown- Key of A- Fonzie's favorite key.

Was PC's Crazy in there?

RE: Jam Session

I will try to pull down the chords on the ones I dont know from Tab Crawler.... If anyone has them send to DouglasHailey@MAC.com... I have been cleaning my Garage today. Found a crate of Albums and my turntable.... Anyone nostalgic for Vinyl??? or just IPODs between sets. I was surprised how many Albums I had that  didn't make it to digital for one reason or another... If you want hear how Clapton found his sound in the early eights listen to Okie,,,, JJ Cales Troubador Album CD..

RE: Jam Session

Doug,

I have JJ Cales Naturally CD. It has Call me the Breeze(skynyrd) Bringing it back (kansas)and After Midnight (EC). Good Stuff, agreed.

RE: Jam Session
Posted Tuesday, June 29, 2010 10:37 AM

That looks about right to me so far on the songs and keys.

Guitar wise....Jackson and Lindley are playing in open G (as I will be) for  running on empty.

I've been playing along with this version for practice

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=la6uFTYd7Ls

Not Lindley on the slide I don't believe as he usually plays lap style...I play bottleneck style anyway as this guy does.

Not sure about PC's Crazy...I have worked on Mama's got a squeezebox and Play that funky music  that we're mentioned earlier in the thread though.

On another amusing note...Was playing around with The Bomber (james gang) the other day in open G tuning after watching the old video of it. Saw Joe was using an open tuning for it...worked pretty good...I had always tried to play that in a standard tuning years ago and it never really sounded quite right.

Ok...so here is our current linup for musicians:

Steve Shaw - Drums/Vocals

Robin - Bass

Michele - Keyboard and vocals

Michele's brother - Drums (maybe..if needed)

Doug - Guitar/Vocals

Me- Gutiar/Vocals/keyboard

Times a runnin' out...anyone else?

Just a reminder...this is a jam session so if anyone interested does change there mind at the last minute and wants to participate..thats fine because its all good.

Did we ever secure a tambourine for Rose?

Robin - I did talk to Randy Lemon about a week ago..he is thinking about coming..wouldn't be unlike him to show up unexpected at teh jam. Maybe he'll bring that old HiWatt you sold him 35 years ago..lol.

Ok - I am back in the loop. LIfe has been CRAZY....work has been crazier (life at a trauma center) but am now caught up on the thread...

Runnin' on Empy is in D.  I like Oh Darlin in A (the lower I sing, the better - am really a tenor by now...lol)

Gotta start working on Doug's list and the Crowded House tune pic of Steve's. Are we truly trashing Robin's picks ?

I still have to paint the tamborine green.  Really impressed and grateful for the sound system you guys have pulled together. I am looking forward to this.  No matter what, a good time will be had by all.  This is not American Idol...no judges.

ALL of my vinyl had now been put into my itunes library. Would share any of it with anyone anytime.  I am burning some eclectic CD's to spin after the jam. Want some music from the 70's and some dancing tunes for the end of the night.  Don't want anyone leaving because they are bored.  LOL

Gotta fly. Work to do. Thanks for ALL of your hard work in pulling this together. I have even grown some hair for the occasion. Ought to be long enough to spike it up.  Later guys !

RE: Jam Session
Posted Sunday, July 4, 2010 03:12 PM

Runnin on empty in D huh? Oook...I've been playing the slide part in open G and doing an "A" bar chord off the second fret for rhythym...its all been matching the RoE video I linked a couple post ago. Michelle..listen to that video I posted and see if thats in D...no one is playing standard tuning or chords in it on guitar that I could see to go by..it may be in D.

Sorry for my ignorance..I was never a very techincal musician...I listen to a song...I play the song...just how I've always done it.

My open tuning is actually a drop D open G which is dgdgbd so yeah...its probably accurate for that one given half my strings are in D :P

K..just talkd to Steve Shaw...just went ahead and called him to make sure we were all getting on the same page here.

Steve...you can disregard those messages I sent now.

He is good to drum for the whole thing. Michelle..I guess you can go ahead and release your brother from his "family" obligations there..lol. Steve said he is also going to furnish his own drum kit.

Steve asked how many mic's we have...good question. I know Doug is bringing his PA system up...how many Mic's do we have coming so far though?

Yeah...go ahead and bring it Robin...that'll be 4...should be enough. Glad you said that Doug...been meaning to ask. I might run my keyboard through the mixer too if you have enough. Either that or I'll run it throuh my bass amp. Either/or.
