Walteria Thursday Men’s Step Group
History & Purpose
This format of this meeting was started by a group of men who wanted to create a dynamic meeting environment where they could bring those they were currently sponsoring.
Their intention was to provide a very focused meeting for the purpose of motivating and guiding their “sponsees” through the 12 Steps in a very clear and straightforward manner. No one was to be a teacher or guru.
The original members were highly committed, claiming “the only excuse for missing a meeting was hospitalization or death.
These individuals believed that alcoholism is a tragically fatal disease and that the 12 Steps as outlined in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous was the solution for alcoholism prescribed by AA’s original founders and, most importantly, that this was the only real solution that had worked for them.
They were adamant about the fact that they were not claiming that “this way” was the very best or the only way to do it. It is simply an approach that had worked for them – and where other approaches to the Steps had failed to produce lasting and/or quality sobriety.
The meeting format calls for cross talk (a) primarily for the purpose of keeping the meeting on the format, but also (b) to provide helpful feedback, and (c) to encourage participants who may be “procrastinating” or “balking” working the Steps.
The meeting founders did this fully aware that crosstalk (of any type, but specifically the type that confronted people on their motivations, etc.) was a very different format from the typical AA meeting, which allows tolerance and support regardless of whatever is shared.
Therefore, the original founders envisioned this meeting as a very different and special type of recovery meeting and not suited for everyone. For this reason, it was decided that the meeting should be unlisted however in recent years it is now listed for those looking for the straight forward program message from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous.
The members of the group who attend are either currently being sponsored by a member or specifically invited by a member. They agree to commit to not only finishing and completing their own 12 Step journey but to bring other men weekly to this Step Crosstalk Meeting and to guide them through the 12 Step process together.
The most efficient way the group sustains its effectiveness is by the attending members agreeing to “Directly Sponsor” new men into the group and passing along the gift of recovery given to them through the group focused purpose and the precise recovery program outlined in the book Alcoholics Anonymous.
The bottom line is these individuals took alcoholism very seriously – literally life and death and we continue with that belief.
