What spare time I do have is spent at the gym, doing charity work, renovating homes, wood working, traveling and spending time with my Springer Spaniel.
One of my greatest accomplishments since living in Atlanta has been my involvement a 501(c)3 non-profit charity called Joining Hearts. Joining Hearts is the largest and oldest all volunteer HIV/AIDS non-profit organizations in Metro Atlanta and the Southeast. The mission of Joining Hearts is to provide housing assistance to men, women and children who have become homeless due to a recent diagnosis of HIV/AIDS.
I started volunteering as an event bartender in 2000 and served on the board of directors in a variety of roles from 2007 - 2013 as Assistant Director of Events, Director of Events and President. Currently I serve on the Advisory Board of Directors assisting the organization with corporate sponsors and planning six annual fundraising events. During our 27 year history, Joining Hearts has donated over $1,779,500 to our beneficiaries, providing hope and saving thousands of lives.
Back in Greenville,SC I always felt sheltered from the world around me. One thing living in Atlanta has truly taught me is that old cliche of "Don't judge a book by it's cover". You never know what others are going through in their own lives. When you think your life is going rough, there's always someone else who is facing even bigger battles and struggles. Everyone has a story and we must be compassionate to those we are given the opportunity to cross paths with in life.
