I remember Richard Tofte as an especially intelligent person, perhaps the most learned for his age in his class. I did not know him well, but respected him greatly.

Richard and I were good friends, especially in grade school. He lived just around the corner from PS 18, I lived a few streets away. Rich was a great pre-dungeons and dragons type of guy, had a terrific collection of small lead castings of soldiers and a large collection of matchbox cars. He, along with his Dad, Henry (I recall) built a beautiful model train diorama that took up a good part of their basement, always changing and improving. We spent hours arranging soldiers in formations that he got from books on the military. He was a terrific scholar. I searched him out from time to time, finally locating him through the internet. When I looked for more information I found he had unfortunately recently passed away. Yet I discovered that he was at a University and had 5 daughters. I never found a way to contact any of the family. Wished I'd found him sooner.
