THOMPSON, Gerald E., SO, of Ottawa Lake, MI, passed away suddenly Saturday, May 2, 1998 at his residence. He grew up In Tucson, AZ. graduating from Tucson High School in 1965. Dr. Thompson attended the University of Arizona where he received a Bachelors Degree in 1969, a Masters Degree
in History in 1972 and his doctorate in 1978. Prior to 1978 he served on the facilities of Pima Community College and the University of Arizona. In 1978.

Dr. Thompson joined the History Department of the University of Toledo and remained until his death. He authored the following books, Edward E. Beal and The American West, and The Army and the Navajo. He was the editor of The Historian A Journal of History and Assistant Editor of Arizona and The West, these are quarterly journals. Dr. Thompson was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, Society of California Pioneers, the Arizona Historical Association and many others. He also served in the Arizona Army National Guard from 1969 through 1975.

Dr. Thompson is survived by his wife, Margaret; sisters, Eleanor Welton and Marilyn Mowbray; sister-in-law, Kathryn Kohler and her children, Michelle and Jan DeGon; nieces, Kathy Kaperman, Melinda Chitwood and Wendy Hendry and nephews, Frank Enfinger, Kenneth and Gilbert Mowbray.

Friends may call at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main St., Sylvania, Ohio on Wednesday, May 6, 1998 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. where Funeral Services will be held Thursday, May 7, 1998 at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family are invited to attend Graveside Services at East Lawn Cemetery in Tucson, AZ on Saturday, May 9, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. Those wishing to give memorials are asked to consider the Lend A Paw Feline Shelter, 38 Hillwyck Dr., Toledo, OH 43615 or the Phi Alpha Theta Scholarship Fund c/o University of Toledo History Department, 2801 West Bancroft St. Toledo.
