Alex Ruiz Baray

Alex R. Baray was called home to be with the Lord on June 29, 2026. He was born in Tucson, Arizona, on December 18, 1947. Alex grew up in Barrio Viejo, where he attended neighborhood schools before graduating from Tucson High School in 1967. He later earned his degree from the University of Arizona in 1977.
Alex dedicated his life to serving others through education and athletics. He taught at Safford Magnet Middle School for 30 years, where he positively impacted countless students. His passion for coaching led him to the basketball courts of Tucson High School, Rincon High School, and Cholla High School, where he mentored generations of young athletes.
Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Irene Baray; his three children, Alec (Karla), Carrie (Dwayne), and Amy (Oscar); his ten cherished grandchildren, Tristen (Perla), Daunte, Malaea, Gavin, Oscar, Gianna, Marcus, Maddux, Luke, and Ava; his two treasured great-granddaughters, Ahlaia and Aylani; his brother, Oscar (Barbara); and many loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends.
Nothing brought Alex greater pride than his family. He found immense joy in watching his children and grandchildren grow, celebrating their academic achievements, athletic accomplishments, and milestones. The arrival of his twin great-granddaughters, Ahlaia and Aylani, was one of life’s greatest blessings, filling his heart with immeasurable love and happiness.
Alex will be deeply missed by Irene and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be remembered for his quick wit, unforgettable jokes, simple but meaningful words of advice, and the coaching wisdom he generously shared throughout his life. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, offering his time, guidance, and unwavering support whenever it was needed.
Throughout his life, Alex carried many titles—husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, friend, athlete, teacher, and coach. Yet above all else, the title that best defined him was simply this: a good man. A man of integrity, resilience, compassion, and strength, whose legacy will continue to live on in the lives of those he loved and inspired.
