Carol Voelkl Brody

I went to school in UA until the summer before our senior year, when my family moved to California. I graduated from Tustin HS & the University of California, Irvine, then left for a year of travel to over 25 countries in Europe, North Africa & the Middle East. I met my husband, who was just starting to teach & coach, in 1971, & I then earned a secondary teaching credential from California State University, Long Beach in 1973. I taught French, Spanish, German & English from 1973 to 2009, with a four year leave to sell real estate & marry Cary in 1980. I have traveled to most of the US states & the Caribbean. We have lost count of how many times we have been to Hawaii, then after we retired, added about 10-12 more countries. We have traveled to western and central Europe, the British Isles, New Zealand, Australia, Israel, China & Hong Kong.
My husband passed away in April 2019 while we were in the process of buying our new home 7 mintues away in Cypress, California, where I now live. Since then, I've been back to Istanbul, then to Dubai, Oman, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Singapore, then back to Portugal (3 times), Spain and Italy. My son married a Portuguese girl in Portugal (outside Lisbon) in July 2022 and my daughter is engaged to marry a German guy in Germany (outside Munich) in October 2023.

I remember walking 1.8 miles each way to Jones Jr. High, snow, rain, or not. If the snow was really bad, I would walk .2 miles back to a bus stop & sneak on. Once the bus never came, & several of us were left stranded in the snow. A nice lady on the corner brought us in & gave us hot chocolate until the bus came an hour later.
I remember when JFK was shot & my French teacher asked me to go to the teachers' lounge to get the latest from the TV. It said he was probably going to be OK, so I went back to tell the class, & soon after the principal came on the PA & said JFK had died.
I remember going to prom junior year & my father said I couldn't go to a breakfast picnic the next day without 8 hours rest. After prom, I slept in the office attached to our house, left with my friends early the next morning before my parents got up, & they thought I never came home after prom.
