Born in St. Helens, Oregon on February 12, 1938, Larry was raised on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in central Oregon where his father was Superintendent. His education began in a one room schoolhouse and in 1962 he graduated from the University of Oregon School of Medicine. Upon finishing his training at Philadelphia General Hospital, he joined Associated Radiologists of Alameda Hospital where he worked until 2005. His special interest was aviation which led him in 1990 to build his own Glasair aircraft in the basement of the Oakland Hills home he shared with his beloved wife of 36 years, Janet Gray Welter. He flew this plane for 20 years then donated it to the Oakland Aviation Museum. He was a gifted artist whose special love was painting on silk. He was an avid enthusiast of boating, skiing, tinkering and inventing. His patented invention for a medical device is still in general use. Besides his wife, Janet, Larry is survived by his sisters, Marilyn Englund, and Phyllis Welter, and by his devoted nephews, Larry Ausman, Greg Ausman and niece, Pam Ausman Loehner, as well as their children. His family and friends will miss his sense of humor and generous nature. There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Anne's Church, 1600 Rossmoor Parkway, Walnut Creek on August 17 at 11am.
