My Diaries:

Friday, February 9, 1962, Grade 9 at Point Grey Jr Hi:

"Everybody was wearing ties & sweatshirts & sneakers today (it's a fad) & it looked really funny. A boy wore a sweatshirt and Mr. Johnson made him go home and change. Ken P and Graydon E wore ties and I think it looks sharp. Bill P wore one, too."

What a difference a generation makes! And do you remember:
-locker inspections?
-sanding desks?
-what detentions were called?
-things that were cool then were "mint"?
-Spelling Bees & Talent Shows (with Campaign Managers!)
-Dance Party, winning records on C-FUN
-trading school pictures
-for the girls: sleeping on rollers?

One of the other "things" to remember from school days of the 60's are " Bee Hive"  hair doos.  Now that in itself is another 60's saying is it not?  Hair Doo?  Anyway, the Bee Hive would climb to the ceiling for about a foot or 1 1/2', were hard as rocks and really did look more like an ant hill.  They were wound up in a swirl of hair that was real, or so I am told.   But we called the Bee Hives because they were sweet.  And Cool of course.

Some of my memories are from Point Grey in Junior High, Grade 9, as well as Magee.  Some more:

-wearing red on Thursday was a no-no!  Anyone have any idea where that came from?

-girls making gum wrapper chains for their boyfriends- they had to be as tall as the boyfriend!

   - Grub Day- one day I was accused of dressing for Grub Day because I had forgotten to change from my running shoes into my flats after Gym!  And I was embarrassed!!

-I wrote about watching Dance Party- not Dick Clark's but a local one where kids went that we knew.  Anyone remember where that was?  I wrote that I saw Phil Allingham there and others.

More expressions:

   - what you wrote if you saw a cute guy/gal (you can tell where MY head was!):  GaGa!  Zot! Zot!

-or what you wrote on letters:  ITALY, HOLLAND

   -"big, hairy deal"

   -"large charge"

We did a lot of moving lockers, trading lockers, trading locker combinations & trading books in my crowd, depending on who we were hanging with at the time.

I remember Marion and I wearing hot pants to school and we were driven home by the girl's school councillor. Very embarassing. Today the teachers are wearing outfits that are shorter than our "hot pants", which had a short skirt covering them!!!!!

Marti: I certainly remember the hot pants incident! It was so ridiculous. That sure would not have happened in these times. I actually walked home & my Mom was so angry she kept me home for the rest of the day. Ah, the memories. It is so much fun to be going back in time with our classmates from 49 years ago.

Hi all,

Its been over a week since the municipal elections; and only Sue Thomas & Joan Fraser have congratulated Joy Benson (Alexander) re her stuff onto Vancouver's School Board. Not only did she make it; but came second in Vancouver. Some of you have done this, but not in the Lower Mainland. She deserves many plaudits for caring about education. Cheers, Many V

I add my congratulations to Joy for stepping up to help look after the education programs and needs of the community.

Good on you Joy. Excellent time in life to be digging into a demanding career.

Hey Many, I told Joy before the election that she had our vote, so of course it was a sure thing; the cynics say having and "A" and thus top of the ballot helps with votes, but quality and experience counts mostly.  Joy, I ran into Chris Richardson last Thurs. at the Maritime Museum, also elected a school trustee, and told him you were good stuff.  He agrees, despite being of "another party".  :)

Congratulations Joy!!! Now for the rest of us out of Van., could you be Education Minister next?!!! Please!

Congratulations to Joy on her election! Placing second above several incumbents is quite a feat. I didn't recognize her name and living in Burnaby I'm not following Vancouver politics as closely as I used to.

Well done Joy.  I don't live in Vancouver so was not aware, but it is great news.

There is a wonder about Joy. She is like the energizer bunny! I have watched her run past my house and up Chancellor for almost 30 years! She was an exceptional teacher and counsellor and will do the finest job as a member of the Vancouver School Board. We are very lucky! Congratulations Joy!

FLASHBACKS

From my San Luis Obispo newspaper today:

"On February 15, 1965, Canada's new maple-leaf flag, which replaced the "Red Ensign" design, was unfurled in ceremonies in Ottawa."

From my diary, remember when:

At Point Grey, when we had Assemblies (ask me how long it took me to remember what they were called!) students would carry the flags out?  And they were called the Color Guard?

We would get awards in the form of patches for our sweaters, called "blocks?"  And "double blocks?"

How could I forget Feb 15, 1965?  Mr. Ginther's Canadian history class shanghaied me into giving a short speech (my first ever) on the old Red Ensign to the gathered body of Magee out front, Another student spoke of the new flag and it was raised ceremoniously for the first time.  The local MP, Arthur Laing was supposed to be guest of honour but was a no-show.  Linda Carter and Joy Benson both made reference to this in signing my school annual.

While I remember nothing about the assembley to which Ron refers, I am pleased to recall Mr Ginter.  He managed to toss off faintly salacious references (Samuel Hearne amongst the Inuit) but also to construct assignments that allowed individual interest to dictate the topic.  His class was the first in which I used primary sources, 1907 newsarticles from Washington and BC on the topic of the Asian Exclusion Act and resultant labour unrest  / rioting with Sikh woodworkers the target.

Many Vaartnou

Hi Carolyn,

Good stuff re Point Grey - was only there for Grades 7&8. Picked up on the blocks. Unfortunately, small error for a Grade 7. They had me listed as "Nancy" Vaartnou. No wonder I departed for Magee in Grade 9. Ta ta.On a different note: Lorne Ginther was a great teacher - had him from 9-11, then Chuck in Grade 12 (I was in his class when JFK was shot). Then Lorne in Grade 13. We must have been upset in Grade 13: so Lorne picked up a chair by the lowest ring with one hand, and then lifted it up over his head - guess we behaved better for the rest of Grade 13 & collectively gave him a book by John Gunther (none of us had ever read this).
