I remember watching him hit the opposing team on football friday nights. I understand he was a college success as well. Lots of laughs!

I remember the very first time I laid eyes on Mac. Larry brought him over to my parents' house where a group of us were. Mac was shy as Larry introduced him as our new friend AND new ball player for VHS. We all loved Mac from the gitgo....so much.

Mac and his sister lived across the street from us. Hal and Mary Lois, his mom and dad, were the best, too. He always had a smile on his face. Good memories.

In the summer of 1962, Mac was supposed to be the best man in my wedding in Victoria. As (bad) luck would have it, he had an emergency appendectomy on my wedding day and my brother had to step in for the ceremony. After the bouquet was thrown and we made our way through a shower of rice, our first stop before leaving for a brief honeymoon in Mexico City was Victoria Hospital, to see how Mac was doing after his surgery. After some typical Mac-style quips and comments about the cute nurses, he told us to get on out of there, didn't we have something better to do? What a great friend he was and what a wonderful man!

Mac was always the "gentle giant"--a big guy with a bigger heart! It seems like he was always laughing, either out loud or through his eyes. We kept up with Mac, lost him for a while and then found him again when we lived in Denver in 2001. I was volunteering in a hospital information desk when I saw the name Hal Lawrence McElroy on the scheduled surgery list. There could only be one! I'm so glad we got to spend some time with him then!

Saw Mac in 1962 when I was at LSU and he was with TCU & they played LSU in Baton Rouge.  Drove him & a couple of his teammates around town/campus. He was always quite gregarious & full of life.
