I have many wonderful memories of Mike during the years both of our families lived first in Fort Worth, then  in Lake Worth, where Barbara and I both taught school at the Junior HIgh. We lived just a stone's throw away from each other, and our small children grew up together. But one of my most poignant memories of Mike was earlier in our friendship, when my young husband (we were both just 21) had been seriously injured in a car wreck and Mike and Barbara knew about it before I did. They had to call me to tell me about it, but Mike insisted I stay where I was and he would come get me and take me to the hospital. Somehow I made myself follow his orders instead of getting into a car to drive myself and risk another car accident in my emotionally volatile state. He kept me from falling apart before we reached the hospital and Barbara and Mike both gave me tremendous emotional support during Johnny's long and difficult recovery period. That extreme act of kindness and love will never leave my memory.
