I just wanted to let everyone know-and I assume you all know better than I-that SCE&G is proposing to locate/construct a coal ash landfill in Canadys along the Edisto River. As both a geologist and as an evironmentalist, I oppose this for several geologic/environmental reasons-not least of which is that with the high water table, I am sure that there wiull be contaminant leakage into the Edisto River basin.
My understanding is that right now, the only thing stopping this project is that Colleton County Council has to grant an exception to zoning in that area. I have FOI'ed the file via the Freedom of Information office at SCDHEC to look at the assessment report SCE&G has submitted as part of their permitting package. Frankly, although the federal government has put stricter regulations in place since the TVA disaster, SCE&G will say they can design around any permitting/environmental issues and will probably succeed. Having been on both sides of this issue on other projects, I can tell you right now, the best chance of stopping this is for County Council to decline to issue the exemption. And for legislators to contact Earl Hunter (SCDHEC commissioner). I strongly urge everyone to contact County Council and legislators to oppose this. Otherwise, you will probably have another coal ash landfill (SCE&G already has two there) in Canadys.
ETA: SCDHEC will more than likely approve this project-if it can be engineered around the water table, etc, SCDHEC will have no option except to do so.
