

Barbara Jo Cliff-Mentzer

Waseca - Barbara Jo Cliff-Mentzer, 79, passed away on November 28, 2024, in San Antonio, TX. Born on March 5, 1945, in Waseca, MN, she was a dedicated educator and a passionate artist.
Barbara's educational journey began at Waseca Public Schools and continued at Waseca High School. She later earned a Bachelor's degree in teaching from Parsons College in Fairfield, IA. Her passion for teaching led her to a rewarding career, starting at Owatonna Public Schools and eventually bringing her to San Antonio, TX. Barbara was especially passionate about teaching reading to children, a testament to her dedication to literacy and education.
A quiet and private individual, Barbara found solace and joy in her home, surrounded by her dogs and her art. After retiring, Barbara devoted much of her time to her art. She was an avid painter, capturing everything from serene winter landscapes reminiscent of her childhood in Minnesota to wildlife and scenes of places she had visited. In addition to painting, Barbara enjoyed decorating, collecting antiques, attending estate sales, and spending quality time with her family and beloved dogs.
Barbara was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church in San Antonio, TX, where she engaged with her community and shared her kindness.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Margaret Cliff; brothers, Tom Cliff Jr. and Rick Cliff; sister-in-law, Barbara Cliff; grandson, Trae Daniel Peterson; and her beloved dog, Lydie. Barbara is survived by her husband, Larry Mentzer of San Antonio, TX; her children, Meredith (Kipp) Johnson of Waseca, MN, Chris (Angie) Roberts of Prior Lake, MN, and Candace (Paul) Wilson of Castle Hills, TX; her first husband, Richard Roberts of Waseca, MN; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A private graveside memorial service will be held at Woodville Cemetery on May 17, 2025. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Waseca County Animal and Humane Society or the Waseca County Food Shelf, honoring Barbara's love for animals and her community.

We were so shocked to learn of Barb's passing. On this site we hadn't heard from her for the past six years, but if you click on the link to her profile and go back to when she joined in 2016 you will hear her voice in many remembrances. I'm adding a photo of her at Cheryl's home before the prom.
