Left Wellelsey in 1985, and headed to the University of Alaska, Anchorage. I graduated in 1989 with a B.A. in Justice, with a minor in technical theatre. From there I worked a series of jobs, which included a 7 year stint in the mutual fund industry where I quickly learned that no matter how many ways you try to tell yourself that a job that you hate is a great job, you will never really convince yourself that its true. So, I left finance, and went to work as a live-in nanny/housekeeper/cook while taking the necessary coursework to apply for the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology at Worcester State College. Between going to school part-time, and working 3 part-time jobs, I managed to become a fly fishing instructor for the Casting for Recovery program (www.castingforrecovery.org), teaching women who are breast cancer survivors how to fly fish. Now I work as part of the Comprehensive Brain Injury Team at Berkshire Medical Center, where I try to help brain injured patients get their lives back together. And yes, I still fish every chance I get, and still instruct for CFR.
So, PARENTS--make sure your kids wear their helmets, and wear them properly. And since you are their providers, you had better wear your helmets TOO. I have enough patients.
If you know anyone who is a breast cancer survivor, or who is currently in treatment, please direct them to the Casting for Recovery website listed above.
