My high school graduation present was a trip to Europe, which profoundly changed my life. I was hooked on travel after that and would spend a number of years pursuing as many adventures as possible. After graduating from UNH, I joined the Peace Corps and moved to Mauritania, West Africa. That posting opened up a whole new world, and I began exploring as much of the African continent as possible. After returning to the States in 1985, I moved to San Francisco and took a job at a travel trade magazine. I covered Africa, the Caribbean, several European countries and Alaska. Eventually, I was also made the ski editor which allowed me to travel and ski in Japan, Switzerland, the Canadian Rockies, Utah and Colorado. After leaving the magazine, I became a freelance travel writer, which is something I still do on occasion. And now, for the past 10 years I've been working in retail advertising with companies like GAP, Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn and Macy's. It's been a great ride so far, and I wouldn't change a single thing.
