Sorry to hear that Randy passed away-we were in school together from Garrison to Marshall then the same at North. We were in other activities outside of school also like scouts. RIP
I met both Tom Thompson and Randall Elam at the Indian Hills Swim Club when I was about 9 years old or so.
Also, Randall and I were both in Mrs. Bingham's English class. Needless to say, I didn't make nearly as many classromm comments as Randall. This was a clear indicator of our future lives. I became a psychiatrist adept at saying "tell me more" while Randall's verbiage enabled him to conquer the courtroom.
Actually, what I remember him for the most was the fact that he routinely beat me at ping pong. The world will not be the same.
Randy grew up across the street and 3 doors down from me. We spent a lot of time playing on the Garrison Elementary school grouds. It was obvious that at some point in his life that he would have a career in being a "Smart Guy" - turns out being a lawyer was it. He'll be missed.
I took speech and debate classes with Randy at North. In the Fall the class would compete at debate tournaments and in the Spring we had speech tournaments. The speech tournaments included oration, informative speeches and extemporaneous speeches. Randy was the only one in the class that liked to compete in extemporaneous speaking. At the competition you were given a topic and only a few minutes to prepare and deliver a speech about it. Randy could speak on any topic off the cuff. He had the "gift of gab" that served him well throughout his career as a trial attorney.
