55 Year Reunion
During our Fifty Year Reunion in 2010, a number of people expressed interest in having a "55 Year Reunion" . Since that time, I have been contacted by classmates requesting we proceed with a reunion in 2015 instead of waiting for 2020 and a 60 Year Reunion. This may have something to do with our current age -- we are not getting any younger.
The purpose of this survey is to determine your interest in a reunion in 2015, where to hold a reunion, and what time of the year would be best for our next reunion.
I had some reservations about holding our next reunion in Williston due to the oil boom in and around Williston. I had the opportunity to travel to Williston last month for a small family reunion with cousins. For those of you who have not been in Williston lately, there have been tremendous changes, but local officials believe the boom has reached a "stabilization stage". This means that construction had caught up with demand, the drilling of new wells has reached a constant state, the infrastructure is capable of handling the population and to some degree the increase in truck traffic.
The population of Williston is now estimated to be between 25,000 - 33,000 and is likely to continue at a high growth rate. The 2010 official US Census had the population at 14,700, but that is clearly a thing of he past.
The construction in and around Williston continues at a rapid rate. As result of the population increase, hundreds of new homes have been added in developments to the East and to the Northwest of Williston. In additon, numerous apartment buildings have been constructed with an increase of individual apartment units numbering in the thousands. Along with the permanent housing construction, a number of new hotels and motels have been added for the more transient population. New commercial entities, belonging to the oil industry, have sprung up on East Broadway, North of town on the highway, and West of town all the way to the "four mile corner".
I visited a number of hotels/motels during my visit to determine if they could support a reunion by setting aside a block of rooms with special rates. I was told that they can do this if we make the reservation request in advance. I also visited dining facilities to determine if they could support a sit down dinner and found a number of candidates. The bottom line is that we could hold a 55 Year reunion in Williston.
Another option is to hold the reunion in Medora, ND. Other classes have opted for this alternative, since it is close enough for a visit to Williston, but far enough away to avoid the heavy truck traffic and congeston in and around Williston. Added features for Medora include, Bully Pulpit Golf Course, the Medora Musical, sufficient hotel rooms, historical significance, shopping, and support for a sit down dinner.
Please take time to take the survey and provide comments to help us plan our next "WHS Class of 1960 Reunion"
