Cambria man dies in car incident

CAMBRIA - A town man working on his car Wednesday morning was killed after the supports holding up the car collapsed, deputies said.

David Greenlief, 56, of Plank road, was pronounced dead from head and chest trauma, said Deputy Franklin Peplowski.

"It's going to be ruled an accidental death," Sgt. Ross Annable said. "It was just a very unfortunate accident."

A neighbor noticed Greenlife under his vehicle around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, but something appeared to be wrong, deputies said. Gary Bell told deputies that the car appeared to have rolled off homemade wooden ramps that Greenlief constructed.

Bell then yelled for Greenlief's wife, Isabel, instructing her to call for help. She had checked on him about 15 minutes before, finding nothing unusual, deputies said.

The neighbor ran back to his house to grab a car jack and came back, raising the car off Greenlief so he could pull him to safety, according to deputies. He immediately began CPR on Greenlief.

Sgt. Douglas Webber helped Bell perform CPR when other deputies and emergency crews arrived, deputies said.

Initially, Mercy Flight was going to fly Greenlief to the Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, but emergency crews decided he had a better chance at Inter-Community Memorial Hospital in Newfane, deputies said.

Deputies concluded the car had been on wooden ramps and rolled backward off the ramps onto Greenlief.
