Pat Connor

Pat Connor was in my 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes at Locust Jr. High through 1966. At times, he could be a problem student for both classmates and teachers. I recall him threatening to beat me up after class and I watched with dread as the wall clock approached 3:20 PM. I tried to sneak out of the class room quickly unnoticed, but Pat cornered me in the hall, and with a smile, said, "don't worry, I'm not going to do anything."  Relieved no end, I was, and surprised to learn that everyone has a good side. I never saw Pat again. Senior year at New Trier, I ran across his obiturary in the Wilmette Life. Pat died in an ambush in Vietnam in 1970. The article was accompanied by this photo.  It brought home the absurdity of war. Pat had nothing to do with Vietnam and Vietnam had never known Pat, yet there he was.
