Stuart A. Cohn (NTE 1970) shares the following:
A Remembrance of Phoebe Snowe (f/k/a Brian Rosenwald)
I attended the celebration of life for Phoebe Snowe f/k/a Brian Rosenwald Saturday March 8. It was held at the wine store (Taste Food & Wine) in Rogers Park in which Phoebe/Brian was a partner for the past 12 or so years.
I knew exactly two people at the event, which was attended by about 50 – Phoebe/Brian’s brother, Kent, and our classmate, David Saltz. (I also greeted and expressed condolences to Phoebe/Brian’s older brother, Larry, whom I had never met.)
It was a nice enough day in Chicago that the Celebration took place outside the store. As long as I stuck it out, there were five or so eulogies given by friends who expressed great fondness and admiration for Phoebe/Brian. As one might surmise, other than two high school friends and Phoebe/Brian’s two brothers, the event was attended solely by members of Phoebe/Brian’s post-transition life. Brother Kent commented that he knew none of the attendees, and that his brother’s social circle had, understandably, been bifurcated between the two distinct phases of his life.
It was nice to see Dave Saltz, who was a long-time executive with the AFL-CIO and later served in the Clinton Labor Department.
I have attached a few photos from the event. The drawing features Phoebe/Brian, on the left in the yellow dress, and a friend. I spoke with the artist, Sheri Smith, who said, “Phoebe was a very sincere and wonderful woman”.
There is a photo of Kent (on the left) and Larry holding the bound Proclamation “In Memory of Phoebe Snowe” adopted by the Cook County Board of Commissioners. The Commissioner for Phoebe/Brian’s County District was in attendance and presented the Proclamation. A photo of the Proclamation is also attached. That was a very nice gesture by the Commissioner.
There is also a photo of a poster of Phoebe/Brian with words to live by, and a shot of a scrolling montage on a flat screen in the store. All very touching.
Requiescat in pace, Brian/Phoebe.
